Here's my problem...when I shut down windows I get: a small window titled VSMON with the message 'This program had performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.' When I click on the 'Details' button it says 'VSMON has caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.dll at 0177:BFF9D709'. But windows doesn't shut down it just sits there causing me to unplug it.

Or in the process of windows shutting down I get blue screen with the message: Afatal exception in the OE has occurred at 0177:BFF9D709'. Then it gives me the option to hit any key to continue or 'ctrl+alt+del' to shut down but doesn't respond to either and have to pull the plug.

Now here's what I've done so far per a troubleshooting method:
1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Group Items check box, click Apply,
click OK, and then click Yes to restart your computer.
3. Test to determine if the issue is resolved by restarting your computer. If your computer shuts
down correctly, one of your startup programs is probably causing the issue.
4. On the Startup tab, clcik to select a box for a startup program in the Named column, clcik OK,
and then click Yes to restart your computer. Test to determine if the startup program that you
disabled caused the issue. If not, repeat with each program.

Well I did that and found that if I uncheck all of the programs that deal with Norton, Iomega, and ZoneAlarm, that the computer will shut down normally. Only problem with that is that I'm not able to get access the internet or Outlook. I figure somehow they're tied into my Norton or ZoneAlarm programs because when I check the boxes for them for startup, I can access the internet and Outlook. But then I have the shutdown problem.

I don't know what I did to mess this all up. Thinking that if I were to uninstall those three programs and then reinstall them then that might clear everything up. But that's just my guess.
What do you think? Any ideas or solutions?

Thanks for the help.

VSMON appears to be part of ZoneAlarm. You might try uninstalling ZoneAlarm, then install it again.

If you are running both a Norton firewall and ZA you are likely to have problems, try just one at a time.

What version of ZA are you using?

You can also set ZA to be off at startup and manually turn it on before you connect, unless you are on DSL or cable, and have an "always on" connection. Then you would want it to be on when you start up.
