sound recording problem

I have a strange problem. My mic and speakers are working. If I talk into the mic I can hear in the speakers. Audio CDs are played. But if I use sound recorder and try to record speech, nothing is recorded! Similarly in voice chat also the other party is unable to hear me. MSN messenger audio tuning wizard says "No microphone detected". Please help me to solve this problem

Go to Control Panel/Multimedia/Audio/Recording, make sure your mic is selected in the 'Preferred Device:' box, click the volume button next to the box, make sure the volume is properly adjusted and the Mute box is unchecked, and click OK.
