OK, system specs first:
Ibuiltit,
IBM 120Gig,
Creative 56K modem ,
Windows ME (I still like it)
Celeron 750
PC100-384 Mgb,

This machine was working fine, all applications played well, IE worked flawlessly.
I got the new HDD , partitioned and installed OS. Installed all other immediate needs testing all along the way. When it came time to go world wide, I get "Web Page Cannot be Found."
I have tested this line with another comp (on it now) and verified that every setting I can find is exactly the same as the machine I am on now but I can not connect in IE or Outlook.
I believe ME carries IE 5.0. I have tried installing IE 5.5 with the exact same results. Even tried repairing it with no luck.
Any ideas?? Suggestions?? Profound thoughts??

Thanks in advance
Frank

Edit: some things I forgot. Dialup connection goes thru the steps, says "Verifing password", then goes to the task bar. There is a small amount of transfer, but once connection is made, nothing.

Do the urls work if you type them in or only not work from clicking on links?

Possible fixes are:
To Click on Reset Web Settings (from IE Options)
To Repair IE (IN SAFE MODE)
To Check that the Encoding is set as Western European (ISO)

I have copied the following because the links are doing funny stuff on my own pc at the moment and I'm not sure quite what is what ... but:-

Go to View | Folder Options | File Types in Windows Explorer and check the values for URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol (click edit, open, edit). The values should read:

application:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

NOTE: The above applies to Win9x. For WinMe, Win2000, and WinXP, use Tools | Folder Options or Control Panel | Folder Options to access the file types. Then edit the OPEN action for the file type. The actual values specified above are the same for each Operating System.

If you find that the above process is set correctly, and you still have problems, then go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

and see if that fixes the problem.

Happy hunting!

Thanks for that Paul,
Sadly though, all attempts have failed. I called my ISP to ask if they would be blocking a second machine (I know it's server assigned IP and not dedicated, but I had to ask), they said there is nothing they do to determine which machine is accessing.

It's the darnedest thing, like I don't have a connection at all, but I do.
Any more ideas would be great, before I start from scratch AGAIN

It's beginning to sound much more like a networking problem alright. Can you ping your DNS - or anything? - but this whole area is still a bit out of my league.

Still, even if you can ping the DNS and your connection uses automatic settings it could do no harm to specify them.

bassman,

You might try removing the network adapter from the properties part of network neighborhood (if that's what it's called in ME) and reboot. Sometimes the files get corrupted. When you reboot and open your internet connection, the OS will recreate the file.

I'm not sure why, but it is recommended to empty all .tif's and cookies before you do it.

This has happened to me twice. It might be worth a try...;)

Steve, thanks. Tried that and no joy. Since this is a fresh install, I have nothing in cache yet as I have not been able to get on:(
Think I might try fresh again and see if I can get past this. It's the simple things that can really drive me nuts, like not being able to get my XP disk to work, but thats another story:p

Have you tried using a different browser? If another browser doesn't work, the problem isn't with IE, but with some other bit of the Dial-up settings. If it does work, you will probably need to uninstall and reinstall IE.

Bassman - you never said - but can you ping your ISP?

Well, I would like to thank those who offered comment. I have been unable to find the time to get to this machine and further prod it into submititon. As of now, I will be installing a different OS and see how that goes.

Thanks for your help
