DSL on USB

A friend is getting DSL installed, What he received from the phone company is two cables and a modem. One cable is a RJ45 the other a USB.
He was told that He could use either one. Is that true? like just running the USB cable only without a NIC ??

It would be my guess that the USB port on the modem has a built in NIC. I have an add-on NIC that plugs into a USB, so it is an established technology. If the phone company says it will work, it probably will. It is the crap at the other end of the line that you have to worry about not working.;) :p
