View Full Version : Eliminating Annoying Noises

I have a couple programs which, despite all efforts on my part to convince them to do otherwise, INSIST on sounding some grating sound effect during certain operations. One is my Norton firewall, which plays that obnoxious someone-dropped-a-ham-on-the-keys piano cord sound every time it informs me of a an event requiring my approval. I about have a coronary with each cookie. The other is an install tracker (Mcafee, I think) that does this stupid finger snapping nonsense with each mouse-over. I've tried looking in the obvious "sounds and multimedia" under control panel, but all I have activated there is the ONLY such sound I WANT, the note telling me an e-mail has arrived. Nor do there seem to be settings for them in the program options themselves. Also searched for all .wav's on the hdd in question, none seem to be likely culprits for this assault upon the peace and serenity of my workspace. Where else might these files or the settings to eliminate them be lurking? OS is win2k.

TIA

Are you sure that the Sounds/Multimedia settings are not there like they are here (http://service2.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/pfdocs/2001100916514536) for Mouse Click noises.

Paul-Thanks for the reply. Nope, nothing else is listed under Norton in "Sounds and Multimedia" except the 3 items shown on the page you sent, and the only item active there at all is my e-mail notification .wav. There's no entry at all for the other program. What I have done though is delete the .wav which seems to be responsible for the Norton Noise Annoyance Feature, (chord.wav, finally figured out which one it was) so the program can't find the damned thing. Guess I'll have to track the other sound down in similar fashion and bump it off as well. I didn't want it to go this far, but drastic times call for drastic measures :D

Since you know one of them you could maybe search the Registry for chord.wav to see if you get any pointers to where/what files are being used.
