Hi,
I'm using win 98 (2nd edition) and have a 56k External USB Starweb Modem. When I copy files 10 megabytes or over from one directory to another on my hard drive I get disconnected from the internet. This also happens when unzipping large zip files and installing software which decompressess. Can someone please help me as my phone bill costs 25 cents each call and I have to connect up to 5 or 6 times per day. $1.50 per day * 7 = $10.50 per week just for disconnection. I would be very very grateful is someone could find or provide a fixing solution for this error. Thankyou.

Check you internet settings to make sure that you don't have any options to disconnect when idle or anything similar checked. Even if you are not using IE, it is a good idea to check those settings since they can effect whatever browser you are using.

Sounds like there ma ybe a resource problem, if when working with local files you get disconnected from the internet. You need to look at what you have running in the background.

Posting a log from StartUp List (http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html) would be a good place to start....

Disregarding the influence of decompression or unzipping large files, I have found that when connected to the internet, I am usually only being disconnected when I am downloading large files. I have told my ISP technician and he gave me several codes to put into the advanced modem settings. Different technicians have given me different codes, and I'm confused as to which one I should use.
These are the different codes:

at%c0\n3

at&f

+ms=11,0

at&fx3

atx3

and also, should error control and compress data be ticked in the advacned modem properties? Also in networking is my dialup adapter meant to be logging onto the net with the Microsoft Family Logon? And in advanced dialup adapter properties should IPX header compression be used, or large IP packets or point to point IP?
