View Full Version : New Computer Problem

Here's one I haven't been able to find any info on yet. My brother is building an AMD system from all new components, got it up and running, Win98 installed, and tried to add a NIC card, which I think is for DSL. CPU is a 700 or 750, I'm waiting for a few more details about the system, CPU and motherboard mainly. Here's his description he sent me by email:
I tried to install the Network card , then I started getting a message on boot-up before the windows screen that said something was missing from my ini files and ended with the file: vredir.vdk, push any key. Then the same message pops up ending with dfs.vxd. Push a key after that one and it waits about two minutes and boots to an error message that says Unable to load dynamic link library cannot find file MSNP32.dll. Nothing I do changes it, and I have removed the drivers for the network card, uninstalled and reinstalled the network stuff, I even tried reg edit on the wild chance it might fix it.
I can't find a word anywhere about the two vdk files missing, and haven't tried to look up the dll file yet. (It's time ror bed.) I'll be doing some more looking tomorrow, but thought I'd see if anyone here had any good ideas. I'm pretty sure it's related to the NIC installation, and I'm not sure if he's installed 4 in 1 drivers, or if they are necessary for his motherboard. Waiting for that answer too. I'm wondering if this all would be related to the 4 in 1 drivers, if they are necessary in this situation. Will have more info soon.
From what I understand so far everything worked until the NIC installation, so that's what I'm figuring is responsible. Thing is I can't find a word about the missing files so far...

Here is some info on the msnp32.dll: Q243431 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q243/4/31.asp) and here for dfs.vxd:q137454 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q137/4/54.ASP) and if it is really vredir.vdk it should be .vxd, so either uninstalling the network components and reinstalling them or trying to manually extract them from the CD should get him back up and running.

Hanging around with you guys is great -- I've learned a lot,
and sometimes can also help out. This is getting easier. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Couldn't find any references to the .vxk file on MSKB either, Pete.
But here's (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q243/4/31.ASP) an article about that error message and the DLL.
Same old, same old -- Extract compressed file, yada, yada... Cheers. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
EDIT: -- Oops! Must type faster. A day late and a dollar short.

I'm an amatuer compared to you guys, but I did have that same problem (same errors), so I'll offer what I did. Went into Control Panel - Network and removed everything there, rebooted and readded the protocols. After next reboot the error messages were gone.

Thanks guys, you mostly confirmed what I already suspected, plus managed to dig up a few links I couldn't find. I'll pass all this along to him and we'll see what happens. I think removing the Network components and reinstalling them will be the most likely solution, I guess we'll see. I hope he doesn't have to get into the registry. The extensions I posted are exactly as he sent them in the email. He may have sent a typo, I don't know, but I posted exactly what he sent me...without a few "colorful" expletives. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Thanks again. The links are great.
Tjay: You'll never know how much I've learned from these folks too. They're terrific.
Route66: Nobody ever said you had to be an expert to have a good suggestion. Thanks for the help, your suggestion just may be the solution.

Update:
He removed everything, got rid of the error messages, but more problems. Here's the latest (edited) email:
Ok, I went and deleted all network settings and drivers, then reloaded them all. the errors went away. Now my computer takes about 5 minutes to boot, it just sits on the windows screen humming pretty tunes to itself. Finally it comes up and asks me for my Microsoft network password???? I kill that and everything is okay again. Can't figure out what the... I am about at the reformat and reload button. My printer WILL NOT DO A THING. No matter what I try, no matter how many times I load the drivers or set it to default...It says printer disconnected. The printer software says to delete the ECP port??? Well okay, my LPT1 says ECP, but how the **** do you delete it and make it come back ECPless? Driving me nuts man. Old hard drive still won't load either.
OK, I've already sent him an email back concerning the printer problem, that's a BIOS setting I'm pretty sure. It should be taken care of soon. Hard drive I'm not sure about, only thing I can think of is possibly an ATA 33 drive with a UDMA xx? Not sure...I've asked for some specs.
For the long boot time I told him to remove the network card in Safe Mode and move it to another slot. He's trying to get a NIC to work for DSL.
Any other ideas? and where the **** is G_H the network wiz?? This time of night I would guess in bed where most sane folks should be http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

OK, got some system info:
VIA Apollo KX133
AMD Athlon 750 processor.
40Gig HD is a Samsung SV4084H,
8Gig is a WD (AC)28400 Cavalier
He's tried moving the NIC to another slot, still boots wanting a network password, I'm not sure if that's the normal fresh install password box or an "I see a NIC, gimme a password" thing...
Would 4 in 1 drivers be needed with this board? I'm not sure, but will be doing some looking around later today to see what I can find out. Will also be looking up some hard drive specs to see if I can figure out why the WD won't cooperate. The machine sees and uses the Samsung 40GB drive, the WD is identified by BIOS but Windows doesn't use it. He's checked jumpers, BIOS is OK, cabling is OK I think.
I admit being stumped here, I'm not that familiar with AMD issues, or newer hardware, but will be digging for info later this afternoon. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You can load the 4 in 1, but I don't think that's the issue...WD hard drives has sort of a weird jumper scheme...not just master slave and cable select...they have this "only drive" setting...I would double check that...as well as the jumpers on the other drive...if it's jumpered for "cable select" that could be a problem...or if it has that same "single device" setting...
I'm not trying to insult anybody's intelligence, but sometimes the simplest things are the cause of the biggest problems...
As far as the network password, that's normal when the computer detects a nic...and the 5 min boot time COULD be the computer looking for a dhcp server to give it an ip address...does he have a static ip or assigned? You said dsl, so if he's been assigned an ip, he can go into network settings and set it to use that...should save some time either way...
Another thing on the slow boot...inside device manager...have him check the ide controllers...these can be disabled from inside windows to improve boot time as long as you don't have a device connected to them...if he doesn't have a secondary slave he can disable it OR if his primary slave is disabled, that could be why the hd doesn't work...
Anyway, some things to try...good luck

I had the same error messages after I tried to put my network card for DSL
after I put a fresh install of win98se. It didn't matter what I did it still wouldn't work and still had the errors.(I had them even after replacing the trouble files)
I dunno if this will help you but I had to reinstall with the network card in. Hope it works.

Sorry guys, I just realized a few minutes ago while looking for info that Apollo KX133 is the chipset, not the motherboard. Trying to get that now.
hiredgoonz: I'm with you on the 4 in 1 drivers and jumper settings, I think something's been missed. I know how many times I've thought I had drives jumpered right and found out it was correct, but backwards...
Password thing has me stumped, so anything helps...
Insult my intelligence? Nope, I wouldn't ask if I didn't want suggestions. Even if they're simple, they may pertain to something that's been missed.

well, I have BOTH: dfs.vdx and MSNP32.dll- the 1st one is a windows system file, and the second is an application extension locted in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
actually I am currently at a loss as to what the EXACT problem is that were're addressing.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
as he's installing xdsl connection to this machine the 1st time, there should be a software CD from the Service Provider that configures all this. My ISP provided one, and there was nothing to it. or are we talking about an additional computer that he wants to 'feed' off of one already connected to xdsl ??
you can't just "get a NIC and plug a xdsl phoneline into it.. hehe http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
you need to configure whatever type of connection .. (in my case it is a WinPoET connection ---which uses the familiar DUN interface)
as was asked above: is it a dynamic or static connection??
out of curiosty who is the provider??
what name/model NIC ??
I wasn't meaning to be sarcastic, I am just trying to understand....... I have adsl, on a similair system, so perhaps I could help.
what does he have his PRIMARY Log on set to??
and he should (most likely) check to see what his 'bindings' are set to. ALL of this makes a BIG difference.
let me know

For now, at least, this is the only machine to be connected through the DSL. The NIC came from the provider I think, and I'm not sure if he got a CD with it. Waiting to find out about the IP address etc.
Motherboard is Power Color PVK-7, I couldn't find much info but here's what I did come up with so far:
PVK7 (http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_comp_pclrmb.html)
VIA (http://www.cyrix.com/support/kx133cptech.htm)
I'll get back with more info as I get it. I've already suggested that he check the properties for networking, primary logon etc. and see what's there, will have to wait for an answer.

Pete -- that box looks a lot like ones I saw at a computer flea market recently.
It may very well be an OEM board that's been re-packaged.

Found this (http://www.powercolor.com.tw/web/product.asp) on the mobo. They're calling it a 'phase-out' model. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
