Whenever I load up a game it crashes whenever I hit a button on the keyboard (not the mouse). How do I stop this? I have Windows 98SE, AMD Duron 900, 192Mb Ram and I don't know the motherboard or graphics card.
I don't want to spend any money!

Does this happen when "any" key is hit? Or maybe just when you hit a cetain combination of keys like Ctrl-Alt-Del. Also, if you have a Windows keyboard could you be hitting the Windows (usually located on the bottom row of keys-has the windows logo on it) key?
What game(s) is it? Do you have anything running in the background?
Is your OS up to date along with Direct X (to at least the version required for the game)...and video/sound drivers.
Any settings in the game settings to deal with this?

It is any key. I am trying to play "No One Lives Forever", "Theme Park World" (not mine!), "Civilization: Call To Power II" plus many others. I have tried all the settings for most of the games and they all come with Direct X if they need it. The thing is, they used to work. I haven't changed anything and I don't think anyone in my family knows how to.

As Bassvax questioned...what's running the the background?
You might want to Ctrl/Alt/Del and close all but Systray and Explorer and see if it happens.
Hmmmmmm...I wonder if you can crank the game up in SAFEMODE temporarily and see if it happens with a minimal set of drivers loaded?

Thanks a lot. It worked. How do you prevent programs running in the background without uninstalling them? I think a graphics software called Picallo is buggering the system but I don't want to uninstall it!

If you want to keep the programs you can do that. Most programs you can start just by going to Start>Programs and clicking on the program. What often happens is when you initially install they plop themselves into your startup menu...
However, you can disable them from doing so. Try Start>Run and type in msconfig>OK
Go to the StartUp tab and look for the culprit there and uncheck it. You will need to Apply and then you will need to restart your computer.
While you're in there you might want to have a look HERE (http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm) and see if there is any other junk you don't want starting up without your permission. ;)
You might want to consider running StartUp List (http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html). This program doesn't have the ability to turn off the programs, but it will list all the programs that start at startup from ALL locations, not just the runkeys and startup folder....it is great for catching a program you can quite figure out where it starts from, plus it is good for catching those undesireables that may hijack your browser settings, etc.
