Hi,
With new carpet has come major static problems, so have bought an anti static mat, my question is , is it safe to connect the earthing ( grounding) wire from the mat to the earth connector on the power point or should it have its own earth stake independednt from the house wiring... and no i dont have a earth leakage device protecting the wiring in the house..

thanks in advance

G'day mate,
I am wondering how have you got a seperate grounding plug for an Australian plug??? anyway, anything connected to ground is improved protection, just know the right cable colours and what you are doing. Dont touch the pins at angles (current runs along these) just use the straight pin - You can reduce some static (in most forms) by earthing. I just earthed my amp its seems to be safe (I hope) and less static on my speakers,
Sorry to have to say but you do this at your own risk - I aint responsible.

BE CAREFUL!

Great to see more Aussies about,

Olie

P.S Im a Sydneysider livin in the USA.

Usually, anti-static mats are connected to the nearest earth, so if you use the mains earth or a separate spike doesn't matter. BUT all connections of anti-static devices, mats, wristbands etc contain a resistor of about 1 - 2 Megohm to ensure that any static charge is dissipated slowly, preventing any possibility of sudden discharge causing damage.
