A reply by MJC in my other recent thread got me to thinking that I should post this for others to view in hopes that it may help someone.:)

My problems started when I downloaded IE6sp1 and then, like an idiot without thinking downloaded Win2Ksp3. I didn't know I had a problem until I attempted to download my email messages. All this was last Monday (10-14). I got a virus hoax message, and deleted it immediately without reading it. Then OE6 gave me a message that it did not shut down properly and might have been due to the last message I received. Thinking I was infected with a virus, I ran NAV scan, but found nothing. OE6 hung my system every time I tried to receive messages. I didn't believe NAV had the virus definition, so I tried several scans from various web sites (IE6 works fine). I couldn't believe that it wasn't a virus at first, but slowly came to realize that the virus hoax message must have been coincidental (did I mention that I design rocket engines in my spare time?)

To add more confusion, I got these Windows Installer dialog boxes every time I started up Windows, so I thought at first that a malicious code was trying to install itself and tried to cancel the Installer. I later found that Installer 2.0 was part of SP3 (and was now permanent). It didn't have any .msi files it recognized, so gave me these ambiguous dialog boxes. (Microsoft, you are so thoughtful!) Two days of struggle and MJC offered the fix in Q319624 (Thanks again :) )

At this point I am down to just OE6 hanging when attempting to receive. I try the control panel repair, empty all temp files, etc. and finally removed OE6. With no success there, I downloaded OE6sp1 again, but no help. THEN I tried to Manually uninstall OE (Q263837). BIG MISTAKE!!!! Now OE hangs any time it is started. I haven't attempted to install IE5.x from the original CD yet, but if and when I do, I'll keep you posted.;)

I think mjc may be correct in that I should have installed IE6sp1 AFTER Win2Ksp3, but I was already running IE6 for several months without problems... I wanted the security patch for vulnerabilities included in the download. Since I didn't run OE until AFTER I installed both SP3 and IE6sp1, I don't know which is to blame, or if the order of installation is the culprit.
