OK I JUST BOUGHT A NEW SOUNDCARD.
Its a Creative PCI 512 - Sounds great :)
When I right click or use a menu i get static crackles (through my speakers) whilst I am only playing music (its a PS2 Optic mouse). Also Internet Explorer 6 causes the winamp to hang for a few seconds when it is loading a webpage (bye bye IE6).
This is really getting to me!
I have enough disk space - 3gb, Im using an AMD K7 500Mhz, Windows 2000, 320+ MB ram, Gigabyte board.
I basically replaced the soundcard as it was a cheap crap one, and it crashed the PC every now and then (I basically got it sorted after like 9 months and then formatted the PC, and the problem came back - so i thought i aint using this anymore, so thats why i replaced my soundcard).
How can i get rid of the static, there doesnt seem to be any hardware or software conflicts.
I dont know if this has anything to do with it, but its running Direct Sound?
Thanks,
Olie :(

1. Check out your sound scheme in "Control Panel > Sounds".
See if this "static" sound is a sound in a wave [.wav] file selected to play when one of these "events" occurs.
The "event" being a right click on certain "objects" or the selection of a menu item.
One of the standard sounds for emptying the "Recycle Bin" is a "burning" sound that actually sounds rather like "static".
If it was caused by this it's volume could be adjusted.
i.e. It would disappear when you turned down the volume control.
2. For "Internet Explorer 6 causes the winamp to hang for a few seconds when it is loading".
It's perhaps a bit of a long shot but:
Go to "Start > Run", type "dxdiag" in the "Open" box and click "ok" to check out your "DirectX" software.
Are you using the latest drivers for the sound card and the mouse?
Also, uninstall Windows Media Player if it's on your hard drive. Sometimes Winamp does not like to reside on the same HD with it.

I know for sure that I dont use Windows Sounds (as they lower performance) and its not a static sound like .wav, it basically is bad static/crackeling when I only run Winamp (playing music) and I use the mouse.
I am trying to get the latest drivers.
Thanks

there may be newer ones out, but SB isn't offering them
drivers (http://www.americas.creative.com/support/files/download.asp?Centric=47&OS=6)

Try removing the sound card and then reinstalling the drivers using the latest available driver. Also see that there are no IRQ conflicts.
Hope this should help :(

I have had the same problem with the last two computers I have owned. I get static when I turn up the master volume control, static when I open up windows in programs and static on drop down menus. I have never figured out what is wrong. It is a Sound Blaster PC 128 card.
It sounds just like when you turn a knob on a radio or stereo receiver at home that has dust and dirt in it. On a home stereo you just clean the contacts or replace the worn part. On this computer, there is nothing to get dirty...you turn it up with your mouse! I don't get it.
Try going without the CD audio cable.....yes, using "digital audio" may have a performance impact when playing CDs while doing something else, but it is more likely to be "clean" and removes on possible source of interference. Also mount the sound card in the slot farthest awy from the CPU, drive cables, etc. There is the possiblity of picking up "noise" on the cable from the jack to the speakers, so make sure that it is not routed nera items....like the monitor, that are know noise sources.
Playing around with the settings may help to...
And for VIA chipset boards, sometimes it will take trying several versions of the Via 4 in 1 drivers/SB driver combos to get a set the plays well together... same for video cards.
Aussieolie......is you mouse corded or wireless? if wireless RF or infrared?
If it is RF wireless make sure you have the sound card as far away from the receiver as possible......

Here is the latest news:
If i use the keyboard, or any mouse (PS2) I get distortion. So it cannot be to do with radio waves.
I wrote tech suport at SoundBlaster - no reply... :(
and I havent played with the settings. I will continue to investigate.
P.S - checked for conflicts...none

Some more......
Adding the following keys with Windows 2000 to the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\BIOS then crackling problems were resolved: PCIConcur = 1 (enabled), FastDRAM = 1 (enabled), AGPConcur = 1 (enabled) [if your video controller is AGP based]. These settings speed up hardware specific operations by allowing installed devices to use extra CPU cycles: PCI, AGP and/or DRAM based I/O transfers from the motherboard interface/bus/bridge (PCI, AGP, DRAM) to the CPU, and the other way around.
