Computer is fine until I connect printer via USB.
When printer connected and computer is then closed down the green light stays on, on front of processor and computer won't switch back on. Fan does not start, does not try to load BIOS - absolutely dead.
To correct it you need to remove USB and wait about half an hour.
Printer connected by parallel port is fine.
Tried another computer of same make and gave same USB problem.
Priner seems ok in other computers.
Any advice please ?

hi IanMcKenzie, welcome to Pc Guide.
there is no need to post the same question twice in two sections, it may be moved to Peripherals. that said,
i have a few questions.
1. do you have the latest motherboad drivers?
2. do you know what size power supply unit you have?
3. try going to the makers web site and see if there Tech support can help you, or they may have a fix for it.
4. what the printer make?
hope it helps.
Sounds like it may be a power problem...there may not be enough power available at the USB ports to handle the printer...especially if the machine in question is an off the shelf like an HP, which is known to have wimpy power supplies. One solution may be to try connecting through a powered USB hub....
Another possibility is the USB connection at the mother board is reversed.
If the Usb connector is Mounted in a card slot on the back plan or on the case itself and not integrated onto the mother board
You could check the cable connection from the usb socket to the M/B and make sure it is mounted Pin1 to Pin1 correctly.
With nothing attached to the usb port having it reversed will not have an effect
But when you connect something to it . This would complete the circuit and cause a short
It’s also Possible you have a bad USB cable causing the short circuit
This would also explain Why it also does the same thing on another system if the same cable is used.

Is there some reason that you don't want it to run on the parallel port?
This is the sort of problem that can drive you nuts, and maybe damage your computer. I'd leave it alone if you can.
Ian,
You had posted the same problem in two different forums......posting only in one is needed, I merged the two threads into this one.
