I had configured my hard disk and cd-drive as primary master and primary slave respectively using only one IDE cable on primary IDE slot.
I removed the Cd-drive from the IDE cable using primary IDE slot and attached it to secondary IDE slot using another IDE cable where I configured the cd-drive as secondary slave.
the computer booted normally into Windows ME.I shut down the system and configured the hard disk and cd-drive as before that is as primary master and primary slave using only one IDE cable on primary IDE slot.
now when i started the system it gave the following message and stopped booting.the message is as below,
"The following file is missing or corrupted:c:\windows\IFSHLP.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted:c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd
Type the name of the Windows Loader(e.g.,c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd)
c>
the above message is displayed & prompt which should appear as "c:\>" appears as "c>".
after this the system is not even booting into safe mode so i booted thro' a windows ME startup disk.after that when I came to c:\> prompt i saw that the windows directory and other directories names had changed to ASCII characters.i was unable to access those directories.
So i ran scandisk/all command and somehow recovered the data and formatted the drive and installed windows 98.what caused the problem and how to rectify the problem.
