A user running windows '98 on a Compaq
computer reports that at least once a day
her computer shuts itself down and restarts
running scan disk, usually in the middle of the day
Does this sound like a power supply problem,
or a big foot kicking the cord??

This sounds EXACTLY like a cpu fan which is failing or failed!

Yep, sounds like CPU fan or power supply failing. Either way it's probably heat. Can you take the cover off and run it with a small fan blowing inside? That may tell you if it's heat, and you can also check the CPU fan.

If it's happening at roughly the same time each day, it may be caused by a momemtary voltage drop.

A/C compressor, or some other big current-draw item starting up. Nearby factory.
Could be lots of things like that causing it. Warmer weather.

Especially if after the re-start, the system runs OK again. If so, you can probably rule out overheating.
