I DETEST AOL with a pashion. I have decided to remove AOL from my network (the only reasons we have it is my mother likes the free news subscriptions) and I am giving her 101 reasons why AOL really does suck. She wants me to find her news elsewhere ( I said there is plenty of sources...in particular she wants news archives - which come free with AOL - its sneaky little marketing campaign)

1. Its AOL
2. It stuffs Windows
3. Messes your Network settings (TCP/IP esp!!!)
4. Adds a few cents onto your bill when updating
5. Adds pointless updates
6. Makes IE worse (Microsoft = Not great, AOL = screwed, Both = Disaster recovery please ;) )
7. It hogs your computer
8. Changes settings without asking
9. It has no virus protection
10. It gives other internet products problems if they are market competitors
11. You pay, and still you get Ad's, junk mail and annoying pop up's
12. Let's not forget all those dialing up problems (busy, cannot get a response, blahhh blahhh blahhh)
13. It makes you want to use the hammer - its not your PC's fault
14. It leaves crappy grahics and crap on your pc.
15. "I love hearing... Yooouvee Gotttt Mailllll" NOT (usually a credit card application or some junk) or "you've got pictures" (no you dont).
16. It treats you like you have no clue about using the internet.
17. Customer service sucks (they dont care if you leave, but they will keep your credit card number anyway).
18. Could it be a cult?
19. I think when it needs a bit of cash, it will just turn down the speed control
"AOL HAS LOST THE CONNECTION" , Im not going to reconnect - we dont need you on our servers
Oppps I just lost my internet connection...I cant finish this list...AOL lost the connection. ;)

"All my friends <B> Don't </B> use AOL" , "Its so easy <B> Not </B> using AOL", "I miss hearing You've Got <B> Junk </B> Mail"

I guess for most people who have been on the net for awhile you are 100 percent correct. One thing though, MY WIFE LIKES AOL!!. if she likes it its ok with me. We use bring your own access because I agree with you and really don't like it.
This is a deal like Microsoft, you love or hate them. But you or I should have 35 million people listen to what we have to say.
Mark:)

AOL AOL AOL AOL AOL....I feeel suicidal ;)
23. I couldnt upgrade it (you need its permission)
24. It ate my address books and email
25. AOL was incharge of my email, your not allowed to keep it for more than 7 days, no arguing!
26. I noticed increased stress levels and relationship problems when i switched to A0L (trust me)
27. i think it has followers  they r protective (be warned)
28. I cant use other chat programs in AOL only AIM.
29. I left it was so easy...you dont get your email address back (they deactivate you a/c so you cannot return under than user name) - guaranteed.

"AOL....its easy"....<b>to get pulled into</b>....

"I made the change" my life is so much better now :) :D :) :D :) :D

"I'm free to do what I want without AOOOOLLLLLLL...Love me...cause Im free"

Hmmmmmmm???!!!
Aussie my friend, if any ISP has that profound of an effect on your life, you need a new one ;)
#23 seems to contradict #5. What upgrade would you want to do?
#25 They sell a service. To use that service, you agree to certain rules. You should always read your contracts before signing and paying.
#28 I'm not to much into chatrooms but I have used Mirc flawlessly on AOL:confused:
#9 What ISP truly does?? Thats why we use AVG. Oh yea, AOL e-mail does not use HTML so you can not get an embeded viri without opening an attachment.
#3 Hmm, be interested in seeing more info on this one.
#20 & #21 Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>AOL, This gives you the option to select any and all versions installed on your system, click "Un-Install" and you are done. Like with many programs, there are things left over that need to be cleaned up.

I no longer use AOL, but that is solely due to the cost. Yes it is expensive, but it serves a purpose for many.
Hopefuly you have found something that works for you:cool:

Ranchdog,

Al Gore never actually said he was, he was misquoted and it continues as a political myth. Amazing how many things reach that level of "Truth". Did you hear the one about humans using only 10% of their brains?? Pure poppycock. Someone did say that, but only as an estimate and without empirical verification. The best research today says that we use 100% of our brains, but how many references have you heard lately to that old myth???

Although I do not use AOL my wife has told me that with version 8 you can set it up not to get pop-up ads. if only everything else was so simple.

Um, gee whiz. I've been using AOHELL since 1996.

Have never had a problem with it, except for the time when I tried to run Zone Alarm with it. Somehow, I wound up doing a format and reinstall, just to fix all the headaches it caused. Now I use Norton's Personal Firewall and AOL with no hiccups whatsoever.

Sometimes I think the people who complain the loudest about AOL just don't realize that it's nothing more than an ISP, a route to the internet, so to speak. A person does not have to use all the bells, whistles and gizmos that come with AOL, unless they want to.

Me? I sign on, minimize and use IE6.

Budfred - I think humans use 100% of their available brains. What is available varies from one to another

Isn't that what I said??

Budfred,

I understand that human brains are approx the same size and weight and yet their is a vast difference in how people appear to think, when I look at my kids, my daughter is thoughtful, bright, pleasent etc, whereas my sons.... appear not to be using all of their brain power. If as you say we use 'all of our brains' then where is the gap ???

kenz,

As you said, in different ways. The parts of the brain devoted to actual thought seems to be fairly small. Most of the brain is employed with sensing, moving, and so on. If you daughter is more thoughtful, it doesn't mean that she is using more of her brain, simply that she is apparently using those attributes more than your sons. They may eventually do the same themselves. Either way, when they do PET scans of the brain, pretty much every part of it is active at some point, just not all at the same time. Having too many areas active at the same times seems to be a factor in attention deficit disorder actually, probably other problems too.

Well, I don't want to hijack this thread, so I will shut up now.

Their so called tech service reps don't know any more about computers than most people and in some cases we know more.
#31
After trying to get help once I got an IM from the service person saying he had looked at my profile and he thought "we could be friends".
I immediately reported him.
Wasn't long after that I said goodbye and good riddance to AOL forever.
LG;)
