hi,
sorry but i have what probably is a dumb question. Assuming that space for me is NOT an issue (i have a hard drive of 30G half empty still) what could I do with a second 20G hard drive installed as a slave in my PC????
Umm......give it to me?;) :D
Seriously, you could use it for another OS, as a backup device, for an alternate configuration of your current OS ....
Since it doesn't seem like you are into downloading massive amounts of music and such it doesn't look like you really need it for storage...but partitioned and used for a second OS and backup is a prettygood idea.

Could i use the second HD and install in it Win98 and have then the choce to boot XP or 98?
Yes, exactly......
What I would do use use a third party bootloader, because 98 doesn't have one and you would most likely have to reinstall XP to get it right with XP's bootloader....
I would set the second up to be a single drive, partition it into a couple of patitions, install 98 on the primary of it....nothing else yet, then reconfigure it to be slave, use fdisk to set the primary to "not active"...really changing it from active. Then set the other drive to primary master. Then I would install something like XOSL (http://www.xosl.org), boot to it and configure it to boot to both drives.....and then I would go and boot to the 98 partition and install everything else.

you can install linux on other drive ... coz you never know what will be the OS you will use in future ? (given your profession, medical technician )
