View Full Version : Sharing my files via the internet

How do I set up my pc so that my family and friends can download files from my pc. I have a cable connection that allows me to search the web faster for whatever-software-pictures-etc... I would like to be able to share these files with friends that basically would spend days surfing for what I can find in minutes. It would be nice if they could just download from my pc. Currently I just write to a floppy or cd and let them use them, but it would be easier if I didn't have to. I am somewhat computer literate (I take instruction well) but not to technical so take it easy on me.
I think I would probably prefer to make my on http webpage, can I just add links to my files? If so how is this done? Do I need to upload the files to somewhere or what? This is a subject I am almost a complete layman on, so if possible try to keep responses to a level I can interpret. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Can't you just send them via email?
Conventional wisdom is that you do not want to share resources over the Internet that you would over an MS Workgroup or Domain -- one of those security things.
You Internet provider probably gives you free Web hosting -- use that. Upload the files to the web server, rather than linking to your computer.
Good luck --

I agree with the Heckler http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif .
Check with your ISP and see if they offer a website building program. Most do, and you just follow their "simple" http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif instructions.

Hey Ya AoK'ing,
I've been contemplating doing the same thing...
I found this (http://singapore.cnet.com/download/pc/swlist/0,2000028725,20000260r,00.htm) through a Google (http://www.google.com) search. I haven't decided what I will try as it is not critical at this time http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Will you be our guinea pig http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif j/k
The web site thing is cool...but how secure do you want your files? Plus the 10MB web space is quite a chunk for free http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

The email idea has one basic problem, file size limits - still a decent yet simple thought, too bad my isp doesn't want me to have it that good.
I'll check into the website hosting- seems to me like they was a limit to the webspace on that also. I'll be checking in to that and back again. I'll be getting back as soo n as I can. Thanks
