I've been working all week to try to resolve the slowdowns not only on the forums but across the entire site.

The first problem was the the hit counters on the main part of the site were whacking the server hard due to some obscure file corruption issue. Since I don't really care about those, I disabled them.

The second problem is that perl scripts seem to be running very slowly right now. I haven't figured out why yet. I have changed the ad code at the top of the forums to be inserted directly instead of using my normal ad rotation script.

Please let me know if things seem better now.

Glad to be back up to speed. :) Pages are loading in between 1-2 seconds, where it has been between 25-50 seconds lately.

Thanks ixl.

No question about it...So far so good.
Been away for a while and was amazed at the difference before I even saw your announcement!
I'll keep my fingers crossed! :D

Thanks for your work Charles. ;)

Thanks guys.

Mark, the front page of the forums will always be slower than any of the other pages, because it requires a large number of database queries to show the contents of the different forums. There's nothing I can do about that, unless I take out some features the absence of which will cause a lot of people here to scream at me. :)

Cool!! I'm glad this has been cleared up, I know it has been an issue for a while now. I never noticed any difference, same as rahul, I suppose because I've been on dial-up, and slow for dial-up. Running at 32,000 now, download on another machine is getting 3.12KB/s which is absolutely SMOKIN' for here... Performance is usually about 21,400-26,400 no matter what speed we log on.

As for this morning, one page loads fine, the next takes ages. That's normal for this connection, and I doubt if it has ever been related to the performance of the forums' server. Other websites are the same, I don't see any difference from one to the other. Can't get DSL, too far from the switching station, cable doesn't exist around here, so we have to live with it...

I'm glad for those of you who do have high speed connections, now you seem to be back up to speed or close...one good thing did come of it though-you were briefly reminded what the rest of us have to deal with on a daily basis. So stop bragging... :D
