VIA Unveils Starter Information PC Reference System featuring Innovative etBIOS™ at VIA Technology Forum in Taipei
Combines VIA's industry-leading chipset and processor technologies with unique small footprint etBIOS™ browser in an innovative and cost-effective platform that enables OEMs to build a US$199 machine that delivers a powerful Internet experience and can be upgraded to a full-function PC in the future.
Taipei, Taiwan, 20 September, 2000 -- VIA Technologies, Inc. today unveiled a reference design for a US$199 Starter Information PC system at the VIA Technology Forum as the next step in its recently launched Information PC Platform Initiative.
The Starter Information PC is built using the standard VIA Information PC hardware reference platform, including a motherboard featuring the VIA Apollo PLE133 SMA chipset with integrated Trident Blade3D™ graphics, a 533MHz VIA Cyrix® III processor, and 32MB SDRAM. To give the user full web surfing and email capabilities, the Starter Information PC system also features the innovative new etBIOS™, a unique small footprint browser that resides in the system's flash memory.
"The Starter Information PC reference design that we are demonstrating at the VIA Technology Forum provides a compelling example of the high levels of innovation that we are committed to implementing on the Information PC platform," commented Wen Chi Chen, President and CEO of VIA. "By combining VIA's industry-leading chipset and processor technologies with the etBIOS™ browser, OEMs can build a US$199 machine that delivers a powerful Internet experience and can be upgraded to a full-function PC in the future."
etBrowser™
Developed by Elegent Technologies Inc, the etBIOS™ is subset of the etBrowserÔ, a unique high-performance small footprint Web browser formerly known as eBIOS™. It can be integrated into a PC system with any standard BIOS and occupies as little as 256KB of memory. With support for a complete range of standard Internet protocols such as PPP, TCP/IP, HTTP, and SSL, as well as HTML and JPEG and GIF file formats, the etBIOS™ delivers a rich Internet experience, allowing users to run almost a complete range of web based applications such as browsing, email, and stock tracking and trading.
The etBIOS™ resides in non-volatile memory and does not require a major subsystem such as a Hard Disk Drive to operate. It powers up and shuts down almost instantly, providing immediate access to the Internet. As an added security feature, the etBIOSÔ will not write to any Hard Disk Drive, making it immune to external virus attacks or user operation errors.
In addition to being part of the configuration for a Starter Information PC, the etBIOS™ can also be integrated into a full-featured PC to provide a fail-safe online security and support service that would allow OEMs to remotely diagnose system failures and deliver virus fixes to the PC via the Internet. Designed to span a wide variety of x86 and RISC platforms, the etBIOS™ also opens up exciting possibilities for adding Internet connectivity to an almost limitless range of appliances and devices.
Cheers.......Son of Zeus.
P.S.
Once again sorry about the sharks & those snakes.
