This is what I did step by step to encounter this problem:
Ok a while back I deleted a file off my HDD, afterwhich I realized it was really important file that took me over 300 hours of work to complete. So I downloaded a program called O&O EzUndo or something like that. My HDD is an 80GB Maxtor with 3 partitions, 3Gb, 60GB, and 15GB. I proceeded to run the program on the 1st partition and it gave me a list of files none of which was the one I needed. So I ran it on the 15GB partition and it appeared to lock up, so I CTRL+ALT+DEL and ended it. After a while a blue screen popped up, not your ordinary blue screen which prompts you to press any key to continue or press CTRL+ALT+DEL, this one just gave me the error message and I had to hit the power switch.
I'm running ASUS P4B533 P4 2.26GHz 512MB RAM, Win2000 Pro. When the computer starts up it says it needs to check the partition D: for file consistancy or something, which is the 60GB one.(Also the only one I didn't run that restore program on). Anyway it gives me a message saying that d:\games\counter-strike\cstrike\maps is lost and can no longer be found. Then it freezes, so I restart my computer and it comes up with this file consistancy thing again but this time for my C:, the 3GB partition. It freezes there too, I belive it also couldn't find a folder. This is the partition I have my OS on. I restart again and opt to skip the consistancy check and it gets me to the desktop. So I go to check my counter-strike/maps folder and sure enough it is gone. So I am pissed at this point and delete that restore software. The thing about it is my maps folder was open at the time I ran the Undo program. My computer starts getting real slow and won't open up My Computer. I end up getting the blue screen and have to turn the power off. Next time I boot computer up it gives me blue screen after it says now booting from OS. I try to reinstall win2k on the HD but it doesn't let me for some reason. It seems every restart the HDD becomes closer and closer to self destruction. It gave me a warning message about losing all data and I should back it up or get all important data off that drive because chances were great it was going to lose it all. So I remove that drive and replace it with another one, I install Win2k on it and boot it up and everything is fine. So I put the 80GB HD back in as slave and start up but the desktop is very bogged down and slow, it took like 5 minutes just to open up My computer and even then it apeared to be locked up. Next time I start up it does not recognize the drive anymore. I tried making it master and having it be the only drive but it is not listed in bios. And when I make it slave it seems to bring the master down with it and refuse to start up even though it is the slave drive and not the one being booted from. The bios just has a blank space where the name should be, I can't change it to auto, the only option is disable or the blank option. It won't detect any of the HDDs if this 80GB one is connected. I haven't tried hooking anything up to the secondary slave. I am guessing you guys will say the HDD has failed and its time for a new on. Even though I just got this one 2 months ago. I don't understand how HDD can crash just like that.
