Synchronised pages only available to me.

Hi all.

I synchronised a very large amount of Internet info. to access offline.
It works fine. However, when I send the same URL that I use to access it to someone else, they cannot access anything. Can you advise me what I have to send them.
They may or may not need to access offline. If you need more details I will send it to you.
One thing I have noticed is a tick in "make this available offline".
Can I perhaps remove this tick and send the URL again?

Check the URL you are sending......it might (probably is) be prefacesd with something indiocating that it is now a local (to your machine) link instead of the original one.......

something like:

File://c:\my docs/pcguide/www.pcguide.com/vb

instead of:

Http://www.pcguide.com/vb

Not sure if you are sending the url as an attachment or just sending the link address or both. If you post the link here we can see if any one has problems with it.

If you just want to send a copy of the page, without the other person having to go on-line to retrieve it, you could save as an mht (WebArchive) file and then send that as an attachment.

thanks for your replies. What I sent is an icon whose properties display "http://christmas-island.31lts.net/" [ie upper case 31LTS.NET]
I have no idea how "Post the link here".
I want the recipient to be able to access the pages in the normal way.
There are loads and loads of pages, but that will be up to them once they have access to the "home" page.

PS I don't know what a URL is, that's how it is described in the properties dialog box viz: Under General XMSINDEX.URL

Hi Ray. A url (universal resource locator) is the link that you would type into the IE address bar. It is the whole thing that starts http: or mailto: etc.

A url file (like your XMSINDEX.url) is actually a favorite (or internet shortcut), though the file extension is usually completely hidden in windows. It is possible to mail these directly from IE to someone so that they can paste them into their favorites folder and have the same link that was on your pc. Since the other user has not yet downloaded the files, nothing will happen by just sending the .url file and since that link is inaccessible they will only get blank pages I'm afraid.

The url you posted in inverted commas is not only a dead link but there is also no domain recorded with Verisign's whois called 31LTS.net. The subdomain name christmas-island is therefore redundant without a domain to fix it to. There would have been a valid domain, when you saved the page originally for offline viewing but it has obviously since closed down.

I'm afraid that if you want your friend to find the same site you are going to have to search for it again - presuming that it still exists somewhere.

From a previous post I know that you got somewhere from http://www.janeresture.com/christmas_bombs/ or just going to the homepage http://www.janeresture.com might allow you to search her site. Otherwise its Google etc. You could copy some pieces of text from your saved pages and paste them into Google (then enclose them with inverted commas) to see if Google can match them to another website.

I think I have discovered that their NEW address in the form that you have suggest is not http://www.christmas-island.3l1t3.net/, but http://www.christmas-island.org. I will try it and thank you for your help.

1. You say it is possible to send a single page(s) without sending the access path.

Is that easy enough for me to understand.


2. How can I delete info. that I have made available offline. I don't know where it resides. When I find it, can I just delete it?

There are a couple of ways to eMail a page from IE.

(a) You can select Tools<>MailAndNews<>SendPage and the page should be embedded into an eMail in OE into which you would then just enter your contact's eMail addy.

(b) You can select File<>SaveAs and choose WebArchive (.mht file) and save it to disk. Then you just add this file as an attachment to an eMail.

mht files are much easier to use because the pics etc are embedded and dont have to be organised and moved around in an accompanying folder. They can be a better way of being able to view stuff offline by saving them all in a location of your choice, but they wont then appear in your favorites folder.

To remove offline webpages go to the Offline Web Pages Folder in the Windows Directory and RClick on the page(s) and choose Delete. To remove them all at once then clear your Temporary Internet Files but ensure you check the box to include off-line content.
