Hi and thanks in advance for the help.

Probably a stupid question. I am building a new PC for the first time. I was told by the person who sold me my power supply that it will not turn on unless it has something plugged into it. I don't have the motherboard in yet, but I have wired up all my case fans (6 of them) and a cold cathode light. I plugged in the power supply and nothing. Is that previous statement true? Do I need to have it plugged into the mother board for it to fire up?

Thanks!!!

Ara

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

I believe what you were told is true. They build power supplies generally to work with a computer and have some built in protections.

The power supply and the motherboard communicate with each other and that is part of the consequence of this. For far more info than you probabl want look here:

ATX style PSU needs to be plugged into the

Motherboard. For switching purposes.

There is a work-around at your own risk.

Locate the 20 pin ATX plug that plugs

into the Motherboard. Jumper the Green

wire and a Black wire and this will kick

on the PSU.

Thanks!! As long as I know I'm not dealing with a dead PSU!

Technically you still don't know yet if you haven't tested it! :p
