Hey, I rencently wiped out my pc, and had a tech reinstall win98 for me. when i got it back the sound would only half way work. now, the volume control has disappeared. i have no idea what caused it, and i haven't done anything for it to happen? i tried to go in thru the find file or folders, volume control, and it pulls it up, but when i double click it it goes to the hour glass like it is working and then stops. how do i get the volume control back as an icon in the bottom right hand screen and make it work?

Best guess is that you need to reinstall the correct or updated SoundCard (or On-board Sound) Drivers and/or an up-to-date version of DirectX.

If you paid a tech, then I would suggest getting him/her to correct this.

You can get DirectX from HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.asp); no harm because its backwards compatible for older stuff.

You can get the drivers from the SoundCard Maker or if it's On-board sound from the makers of the Mobo or the PC.

You could also try removing the "Sound, Video and Multimedia" settings from the Task Manager and rebooting; but I'm guessing this will get you back to where you are now.

Another troubleshooter is to run dxdiag from Start<>Run and both see the version installed and try out some of the tests if they are made available for you.

Post back with more details of your system's hardware if you can.

Did you try to go into Contro Panel, Sound and Media Properties, and put a check in the box for "Show Volume Control On Taskbar? Also click on Audio Tab and then each volume button and make sure nothing is on Mute!

Try reinstalling the Volume Control: Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Windows Setup tab, scroll down to Multimedia and click it, then Details, then click the box to select Volume Control, then OK, then OK again.
