Dell System WIN 98
128 RAM
Device Manager = No problems
Recently, I keep getting the pop-up message noted below. I can launch Explore, Outlook, but when I attempt to open Window 2000, this is when the message typically appears. I've use Add/Remove program to remove Office 2000 and reinstalled it. The problem continues.
"The system is dangerously low in resources! Would you like to terminate the following applications..."
I'm at a loss as to the specific problem and how to run down the problem, plus any fixes.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

That's are pretty big load for Win2K to handle with only that much RAM.
When you start an Office program, it tries to load in RAM. If there isn't enough physical RAM available,
Windows uses virtual memory -- the hard disk. If you're low on disk space also, you'll get this kind of message.
You can do a couple things right away --
•• make more RAM available by shutting down some programs.
•• make more disk space available by deleting unneeded files.
For a longer-term solution you can either install more RAM
or get a bigger HD. RAM is pretty cheap right now,
and the performance should increase in general if you add more.
Win2K will use all you can throw at it.

Thanks for the input, however...
I'm pretty sure memory and/or disk space is the problem. System check shows I have 90% free resources and just under 5GB free space.
To underline my confusion...
ALL other applications function fine (FrontPage, Visual Basic Professional, Explore, etc.) It is only when I double-click on a WORD document and/or WORD (to open) that I get these pop-up windows:
"The system is dangerously low in resources! Would you like to terminate the following probem..." When I click "Yes" than I'm returned to the desktop and nothing will open. Double-click on a folder = Nothing. Click on the Start button = Nothing displayed. Or I get this:
"There's not enough free memory to run this program."
Could this be virus related?
As noted before, I've removed Small Business a few times and reinstalled and still get the error messages (Does not happen with any other program).

If you're '...pretty sure memory and/or disk space is the problem.",
so am I. -- That's what I said in my first reply.
When do you have 90% resources free?
Certainly not after VB and all the
rest of that is loaded on top of Windows 2K.
Before you load Word and a document, do this:
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del once -- How long is the list?
Now do it again after Word is loaded. Compare.
If you load MS Office, with the Office toolbar, you are
probably also loading Find Fast, a notorious memory hog.
This is a completely valid Windows / Office error message,
and has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of virus.

My last post contained a typo and I meant to say I do NOT believe this problem is related to memory, lack of. Then again, I'm not the expert.
Here's my hesitation believing I don't have enough memory, go out and purchase 128 RAM (PC100/168 Pin /None EG); although, it wouldn't hurt and it's really cheap.
Where I'm confused is that every application (FrontPage, Visual Basic 6, Excel, etc.) work fine. No problems, no "lack of resources" or "not enough free memor" pop-up windows when I launch them. I've had multiple programs open at one time, no problems.
Now, with WORD, I suddently can't access (open)WORD or a WORD document. I get the splash screen, then the hour glass goes on and on. Then, I get the messages noted earlier. This happens whether or not I've opened other applications or not, before trying to open WORD.
Concluding thoughts?
Well, just trying to troubleshoot this and open to the problem being memory related. I do have a good resource at the computer department at the local community college.
Again, thanks for your help and input.

Okay, "we" now know for SURE, the problem is NOT related to lack of memory. Dropped in another 128MB this afternoon, problem continues.
To recap...
All programs work just fine except WORD 2000. When I attempt to open WORD directly or via WORD document, nothing happens. Well, one of three things happen:
<> Pop-up window appears stating: "...fatal exception OE has occurred at 0167:BFF9DFF. Press a key & system will shutdown.
<> Lack of resources message, or...
<> Not enough free memory.
I'm curious how to get details about the fatal exception OE message. Would this be the key to the problem with WORD not working?
Other solutions?
Thanks!
