Hi dears,

I've been looking around this forum and haven't seen anything like this.
I reinstalled my W98 SE because of many invalid pages error messages, after upgrading the processor (to AMD Duron 1.2G) and mainboard (to PCChips M810LR  ).
Surprisely, the OS became a kind of mixed W98SE and W98. The interface was like-W98, but the system informations were W98SE. Under "My computer general tab" there wasnīt the "Second Edition" words, but the version was 4.10.2222 A, which means W98SE.
So, I formatted my HDD, not fdisked (I didnīt do it because Fdisk told me there already was a partition - so, I skipped it). It seemed to have gone well - no error messages - and I reinstalled Windows with my OEM W98SE CD - after reboot with CD support from boot floppy disk made through "add/remove programs" option before formatting.
The CD label has a message "to PCs without Windows" and "distribuiton only with a new computer". It came with the computer.
Now, it is W98!! . No WMPlayer, IE 5.0...
What happened? What can I do, please?!
Thank you for replying...

Hi there ico
If I am reading you correctly, you are asking if you can use this Win98 CD to install onto your computer?
If I am correct then you can, MS marked all 98 (95) disk that were supplied with new computers like this at one time. It is a full version of 98

If you are asking about missing MS programs go to ADD/Remove programs and selelct Windows setup. (IE should have loaded by default as it is tied into OS) From there pick and choose the things you would like and remove the things you don't. But you might be better upgrading to IE6 and the latest version of Media Player

Mmm, no, thatīs not what I meant to say...

I can use the CD, in fact, Iīve used it many times, to reinstall my Windows.
The only problem is that, it is a Win98SE CD, but when I try to install, the Win98 is installed, not the Win98SE!

It looks just like Win98, but the the version is 98SEīs...

Look, Iīve got a screenshot:

(sorry about the bad jpg quality, but as Iīve just formatted, the only picture editor available is PaintBrush :D )

Isnīt it weird?
How can I go back to the SE version I used to have??
Any clues?

About the only difference between 98 (with all the updates) and 98se is ICS, so you will need to look and see which optional components have not been installed and do all the updates.

Totally beside the point (and by the way, I appreciate your confusion/frustration re. how the hell did this happen, getting w98 while using a w98se oem disk; I mean, when your order a coke and get a pepsi, it's just not the same), was that Portugese in the screen shot? If so, I've never seen a windows screen in Portugese (am I spelling this correctly). Which makes me think that, for those of us who are dumb and speak only English, and perhaps for others as well, it would be really cool to see very familiar windows images in very different languages? Like, what does a bsod look like in chinese (I mean, besides frightening)? Good luck.
