my 2 coputer has netbui -> card only installed in the network as protocls. the main computer has a tci/ip -> dial up and a netbui -> ethert card.
i only see the copmuter i am on in network nieghboor hood. also 1 card has a LED and it doest light up or antying. When is it supposed to light up? remember im not connected thourh a hub, jut a cable connect

Have you checked for the obvious reasons, like the card not being installed properly, or the cable connections?

The LED should light up when the computer is on if it's working properly. try going into the dos prompt and ping the card (ping 127.0.0.1), if you get no response the card is not not properly installed or dead.
One more obvious question .
Is The cable a Cross Over cable?
Normal cat5 cable will not work unless you have a hub or router

um thats pinging myself.
The card is dead(i think) so i ordered another one.
and its a 50 foot cat5 cable. and it shold work without a hub
If it's a standard Cat5 cab it will not work using only two nic.
It needs to have the CTS/RTS (Clear to send / Ready to send ) strands crossed.
The length (50ft.) will not hurt anything.

start->find->computer...enter in the name of the pc you want to connect to. If it's connected it'll show in the search window. You can double click the icon to view the contents of that pc which are shared. Once you've found it go back to network neighbourhood and click on "entire netowrk". Refresh the screen and the new icon should appear (that is if your connected) The other poster, Rick, was right in the cabling. You'll need a xover or loopback cable to transfer the data back and forth.
good luck

K its not a ethernet card problem(well not with this computer atleast)
this i sthe name of the cable:
25 FEET CAT5 10/100BASE-T ETHERNET CABLE /w TWO RJ45 CONNECTORS
Is that a wrong cable?
Hydro
Normally the Xover or cross over will be on the package or a tag attached to the cable.
Not marked on the cable insulation.
"25 FEET CAT5 10/100BASE-T ETHERNET CABLE /w TWO RJ45 CONNECTORS"
The above tells me you have the wrong cable.
Cat 5 10/100BaseT cross-over cable 25'
Is what should be on the tag or package.

Yeah that was my point. My understanding of ping is that it's a loop back that test the TCP/IP stack which includes the physical layer (NIC).
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong or I'm going to screw up some certifications!

Yep, that's the "ping yourself" command. The above was correct, if you get no response you can figure you're not having a great day...
Thanks to mjc for confirming it for me, I wasn't positive.

Hydro, just go to Home depot and buy the cable ends and re-wire it yourself.....You really only need to cut one end and install it back with the wires in the correct position...its not that hard, and you also get the chance to make that cable "exactly" the legnth you need it to be that way............those ends only cost pennies.......
Somebody around here had a link on how to wire it up for that, saw it in a post sometime earlier this week.......
Ill look for it tomorrow if you havent found it by then......or maybe someone else has the link and can post it?
Keep in mind when youre trying to find the cable you need, that most people dont even know what youre talking about when you ask them about it....

Well I Looked all around on the forum and couldnt find that link perhaps I was mistaken
At any rate heres how to do it...........
These are the wires that count
Only 4 are actually used......
Pin 1 ----------- Pin 3
Pin 2 ----------- Pin 6
Pin 3 ----------- Pin 1
Pin 4 -----------
Pin 5 -----------
Pin 6 ----------- Pin 2
Pin 7 -----------
Pin 8 -----------
These may help also.....

Basically what you're trying to accomplish, is send the transmit pins from comp 1 to the recieve pins on comp 2 and vise/versa

tryhere (http://8wire.com).
You will have to dig a little but the pinout and color coding is there. Very helpful site if you plan to do more networking adventures http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
