amd 450
196mb ram
win2k (dual boot w/ win98)
cd writer "i/o magic 48x16x48" (master), cd rom (slave) on secondary ide
maxtor 40g hd on primary ide

i'm able to burn ok until about halfway through then my system hangs and i have to turn pc completely off and back on again. after doing this my pc runs chkdisk, enters win2k, and then reboots itself. it does this about three times before i'm able to actually able to use win2k. during the chkdsk i'm seeing all kinds of errors (win2k is truncating them). a couple of times when i had to shutdown because of system hanging i got blue screen at startup (some kind of stop error). when this happened i had to physically disconnect the burner before windows would even boot. all of these things happened before and after ASPI update. doesnt matter which burning software i use (clonecd, nero, ez cd creator). i installed one at a time, test burner, uninstalled software and installed next burning software. same thing happens no matter what.

if i move the cd-rom drive to slave on primary ide will it affect my hd performance? would it even help things if i did? i'm in a bad way here. please help.
:( :( :( :(

As for the multiple reboots it is probably trying to overcome/reinstall corrupted files...the best thing would be to look at the log files once you are into 2k, since you are probably not given enough time to actually see what they are when booting.

If you do know exactly what any of them are post them here...

Are you trying to burn the same files or does this happen with any combination of files?

Some more specs would be handy too....like power supply and any other "power hungary" devices like video cards.

Also does the problem happen in 98?

thanks for the reply. i'm going to open my computer back up and double check everything (connections, settings, power supply, etc.) so i can give you all the correct info. i'm not really a computer person so it may take awhile. if you could keep me in mind the next time your around please check back and i should have all the info in order. thanks again and have pleasant day. :)

just opened up case and checked cables and jumper settings. i also looked at power supply. it is 95W. according to my son it's a wonder my computer even boots up with all the other stuff i have inside. i'm going to go get a bigger supply in the morning and see if that works before i waste your time with the other stuff. thanks again.

Umm......I'm with your son on this one.....how does it even boot?

You are using about 1/3 of that just for the CPU .......

well, i got the new power supply (350W), reinstalled win2k by itself, updated all drivers, downloaded all updates, reinstalled the cd burning software that came with burner (it's the only program i have now), and prayed to the computer gods.....same problem. in the event log i got this message about 30 times in a row: "The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block.". i dont know whats going on here...my last cd-rw (philips 16x8x16) worked perfectly in this computer.

Ok.....now this is something to go on....

1. Check to see if DMA is enabled on the burner.....

2. What type of motherboard/chipset do you have?

3. Have you tried a different brand of blank CD?

4. Are the master/slave jumpers set correctly for the position on the cables?

5. Try a new IDE cable for the drives......

guess what? i replaced the cable and now the darn thing is working like there's no tomorrow. sorry if i wasted your time. most people would have probably thought to check out the cable in the first place. well, at least i got a heftier power supply out of this (my pc is booting about twice as fast as it used to now that everyting is in order). DOUBLE THANKS to you, and again i apologize.

kakijewi ..I've been watching your thread because CD writer problems is one of the few puter things I know a bit about! (That's how I got here to PC Guide in the first place.) I am sure I speak for the regulars here in saying that there is NO need to apologize..we are thrilled that you got it fixed...and grateful that you posted back and let us know what the problem was. Many people who post questions here disappear shortly afterwards without telling us anything..so we thank you!:)
