I have come across a problem that seems to be intrinsic to ATX psu's and wonder if any of you guys have experienced it or can give me some idea as to what is happening???
Here goes System will not boot (on ATX type motherboards) if the user has not closed down the system properly (Win 95- Win98) or if the PC has locked up and the user has to switch off.
I have found that if you remove the power cord from the psu for a period of time 15-30 mins the machine will boot ok.....this seems to be the case on any ATX type machines does any one know what is happening.
Thanks.

Welcome, KJW! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
This isn't a problem with the ATX power supply itself.
Make sure the power switch is connected to the correct motherboard header pins.
If you have it connected to the reset header, it won't work correctly.
This behavior may also be caused by a BIOS setup option.
In the Power Management section, look for a setting for the power button.
If it's set as 'Soft Off', the button acts like a reset switch.
Usually you can change the setting to 'Instant Off' or something similar.

Hi KJW
ATX is an industry-wide pc standard for motherboards/psu's/cases, which allows you and me to buy these parts from a wide variety of manufacturers and have them work (in most, but not all cases) together.
You seem to be referring to atx as a particular brand or manufacturer.
It does sound like your system is having problems.
Perhaps some more information would help. Is this a build it yourself system? Motherboard manufacturer? Operating system? Other info?

Thanks guys for your replies, actualy maybe I should have given a little more info, I'm a site engineer with the local authority, they have recently purchased about 400 Toshiba Equium 7100D & 7100S PC's all have ATX power supplies, on some systems (about 5%) user are experiencing boot problems especially when the machine has frozen, locked up or not shut down properly the evening before. Toshiba Tech support are not very helpful as to the reason why this happens hence my questions here.
The Systems seem to be in some sort of sleep mode that won't recover unless the power lead is pulled out for some period of time, then they will boot OK and not have anymore problems.
I have noticed that a similar thing has happened with the odd Dell Viglan & Gateway Pc's (all with ATX power units) I will definately look into the suggestion by tjaymadison. (It may be a bios problem) But what puzzles me is if they are all set the same how come they only have a boot problem under the above conditions??? (Sorry for the long posting)
