Hi, I have a 200MMX computer with Win95 and a DSL modem.
Everytime I boot up,and when I reach the log in screen I click the'OK' button and thats when the computer crashes. It is a hard crash where I have to reboot again. It works fine if I unplug the mouse and use the keyboard. I have tried several other mice...with the same results. Please help.

Hello mussels, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

9 out of 10 times what is causing this problem is the modem and the mouse are on the same com port....is your mouse a serial mouse?

If so you can most likely do a little bit of adjusting in your bios and itll fix the problem

If so Id be glad to explain how...but since there are several posible causes (all of which depend on your "specific" hardware)...I need a little more info

Boot into Safe Mode and change the IRQ the DLS is using. If you have a PS/2 mouse it's using IRQ 12, the DSL modem (NIC?) could be using the same IRQ.

Open Control Panel, then the System icon, highlight Computer and click Properties. That will give you an IRQ list. Any IRQ not listed is free, you can change the problem card to one of those and it should work.

The card may also have jumper settings, you might need to try and find info on it to see if you need to change settings on the card itself to allow it to use a different IRQ.

Don't change the IRQ the mouse uses unless you absolutely have to, it's not the problem, the other component is. If you have all the drivers you need you might also be able to remove the card from Device Manager while in Safe Mode, reinstall it and windows might assign it a different IRQ to begin with. Sometimes you also have to mover them to a different slot on the motherboard.
