Hi all,
Workin' on my Dad's computer by phone line. UGH! He can't get his printer up and runing. He's running win98se and it does not automatically detect his HP 550C Deskjet. So I told him to go to the Printers Utility and "add a printer". The wizard walks him thru until he gets to "insert your win98se disk". It's already inserted. He hits ok and it comes back and says it can't find the win98se disk.
Help! What gives. I've run across this before but can't for the life of me figure out what I did to fix it.
The system:
Asus P5A-B MOBO w/AMD-K6 500
128M RAM
52x CD ROM (some off brand... has been working just fine)
Diamond Stealth AGP 32 meg Graphics card
Sound Blaster 16
Please help!

Have him make sure that the path is directed to his CD drive, if it isn't hit the "browse" button and search for it that way. Under browse it should show "my computer" and under "my computer" should be the drives...

You can go to HP (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/dj550c_swen.html) and download the driver package and try installing it that way.
Also make sure that the old driver is completely removed, you may have to boot into "safe mode" and see if there are any ghost devices (printers) and remove them also.

You can explicitly enter the path in the dialog box:
D:\win98 for example.

I went to the HP web site. They say to use the win98 CD. No drivers available for download.
I have not told my father to type in the path explicitly to win98. I'll try that but don't have much hope for success.
Why would I be able to see the win98 disk when I brouse for it only to have the printer installation proceedure tell me that it can't find the win98 disk when I point to it. This is ridiculous.
I have an almost identical system at my house. As I walk my father through on his computer, I am mimicking the steps on my own. I had no problem installing the printer on my computer.
I don't get it.

The drivers are in the driver11.cab, try finding that .cab file when browsing...
If the installation path is wrong or doesn't include everything then it will come up with the "not found error". When he clicks browse have him make sure that the driver11.cab shows up in the file window efore he clicks ok.
What exactly does it say in the "copy files from" box, when browsing for it?
