Hey guys,

A friend asked me to check out his PC because it wasn't recognizing the keyboard. When the keyboard is plugged in the PC makes a fast (not very loud) beeping noise like bip bip bip....you get the picture. I tried an alternate keyboard and that didn't help. I asked him if when this occured, and he said that right before that he unplugged his modem and then replugged it, all with the power on and the system running...ouch! Does anyone think he wrecked the mobo? Has anyone else seen this? Thanks!

A few more system specs would be helpful.

Unplugging and plugging in devices while the system is "hot" cna cause all sorts of trouble...(unless they are USB devices).

So, what kind of modem, keyboard etc?

What OS?

Thanks for your reply,

He has some generic mobo with an older Award bios, a 166 Pentium chip, PS/2 keyboard (generic and a gateway, windows 95, and as far as the modem(s) go, he has about 6 or 7 of them (mixed ISA and PCI)! He does't even know which one he had in at the time. But the point is that I unplugged all other devices and still had the problem. Aside from the mobo being possibly hurt, how could I communicate with the pc to get it to boot without a keyboard? Thanks again!

Sometimes there is a fuse on the keyboard, but it looks olike one of the little surface mount resistors...

Will it POST, does it give a keyboard missing error? If it won't even POST the I'd say chances are good that he made it extra crispy......

What do you exactly mean by unplugging and plugging in the modem...not pulling it from the slot and reinserting it?

Yes,
It runs through the post, after the memory check and peripheral scan the keyboard missing error appears. He unplugged the modem from the PCI (or maybe the ISA) slot when it was on and running. The second keyboard functions on another PC. But neither of the two allow the system to get past the error. And when you plug them in there is that noise, bip..bip..bip.. really fast.

You can try and reset the BIOS with either the reset jumper (if you can find it) or pulling the batterry (leave it out at least 15 minutes)...

If the fuse is blown look near where the connector for the keyboard is and you may see one of the little rectangular bumps labled fuse or f followed by a number (if you are very lucky...). Also the keyboard controller may be bad. Look for any obivious burn or scorch marks around the slots....
