Hello laddo,
Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
There might be some who frequent here who have the exact answer to your question...
You might be marginal with your CPU. My son plays Mechwarior 4 and I remember when we purchased the game it required at least a 500Mhz processor and that was nearly 2 years ago.
In the meantime, I'm wondering if this particular game has a forum site dedicated to its players?

What version of Windows are you running? DirectX version? Have you searched for patches and/or tweaks for the game?

Ok, two more questions.
1) Is that PIII 600 on a 100MHz fsb or 133MHz fsb?
2) Are you using PC100 SDRAM or PC133 SDRAM?
Ok, in order to come up with a meaningful answer I'll need to know what you were getting before you switched cards and what you are getting now.
You know that things like detail level and various effects will have an impact on the frame rates. So since there are more features to the GF4 in certain games those features being on could negatively impact the frame rates of the game.
There are many different things that could impact the rates.......and the processor is only one, but in general, yes a faster processor should allow you to get "more" out of the GF4.

Aside from all the various settings that can be tweaked, bottom line is a GeForce 4 needs at least a one gig or better processor to function to its full capability.

The AthlonXP 2200+ upgrade would almost certainly cure your ills if you're willing to spend all that money right now. I mean, it's not a huge sum of money, but you can still squeeze some more performance out of your current platform.
PIII's at 1GHz+ on a 133MHz bus are still being sold in Socket370 format. The price per MHz is much more than an AthlonXP or P4, but it also wouldn't cost you a new mobo and RAM. And a 1.2GHz PIII vs a 600MHz one would be quite a speed boost! I'd say worth at least 50% increased performance.
It all comes down to how much you want to spend, tho. If you have $300 burning a hole in your pocket, upgrade the whole thing. For only $100, you can have a shiny new PIII.
Also, I don't think the AGP 2x or 4x is that much of an issue. Certainly not the reason your games are so slow.

Yes, your cpu is the bottleneck. I have a 1 GHz Ahtlon. I upgraded from a GeForce 2 MX to a GeForce 4 Ti 4200. In the Unreal Tournament demos that are purely graphic card based (the fly-by demos), my frame rate drastically improved, nearly tripled in fact. But in the real world demos with bots, the frame rate is almost the same, because the CPU has to handle the calculations for the players.
A 550 MHz processor is really old and upgrading it should give you a vast improvement in fps.
