Since I have a cablemodem my compu is very slow at startup. I don't really know what causes the slowdown. I already shut down some programs at startup by making some changes in msconfig. Maybe it is because of programs like zonealarm and my anti-virus program that my compu is so slow!? Can anybody help me. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks JoJo(Netherlands)

Hey JoJo,

Methinks you answered your own question. The two programs you refer to slow the system down, both while initializing and while running in the background.

Try disabling both at startup and see what happens. You can always start 'em up after the 'puter is booted. I bet it will make a difference.

If my suspicions are correct, then about the only way to correct the problem is a processor and/or RAM upgrade. With cable modem, you most definitely should have both programs running.

Cheers,

I'd be willing to bet it is the network card for the cable modem, this happens to my PC as well, Windows is a little slow when it comes to intializing network cards.

Hello BigBlue66,
I have disabled both Zonealarm and antivirus and it made some difference, but in my opinion not enough. So I think it is my network card that is causing the problem(just like nemesisera said).
Now I'm going to read the article that tjaymadison suggested and see what I will find there.

Thanks guys for solutions

jojo - one other thing

Check in your network neighborhood (my net places in 2k) and see what protocols you have set up. If you have several protocols installed and bound to every adapter, that would also contribute to your slow start up. Assuming you aren't using them, get rid of IPX, Netbeui, etc. Also see what protocols are bound to what adapters; you can increase your boot time by having only what you need in the net neighborhood properties window.

M$ adheres to the principle (among others) that everything on and enabled is better, regardless if you need it.

Speaking of M$, just saw bill boy speaking live about how I should go toss down $480us so I can "unlock the hidden features" of Office XP.
