Hello,

This is my first post. I came here looking for help with upgrading to a faster processor so my son can run a couple of games and so I can install a cd burner for him. As much as I know right now, I have a P11 slot 1 celeron 266 and the cd burner requires at least 400. I bought a really neat looking flight simulator a while back and it also needed a faster processor.

I use a laptop for my business but this machine is used for word processing, a little web surfing, and as I said, we would like to add cd burner.

Any suggestions. I know the older CPU's are no longer being produced, but there must be lots of stuff available still. I have been able to read a little about the compatability of the motherboard and bios, but don't know the manufacturer of the board. I looked in the system info area and think I have a BX chipset.

My previous experience in working inside the box is installing a cd rom on a older machine and adding memory to this one. I'd like to think I could pull this off without causing the smoke detector to start blaring.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

The specs on the pc needed are:
Brand ie. Gateway etc,
Model number
amount and type of RAM
power supply size (wattage)
motherboard model (look on the board itself)
Whatever else it has for peripherals

Then we can look up what modifications can/cannot be done to it. :)

You can download this freeware program to analyze and give you data on your system that you can then post here to get more help:

Dave Johns,

I think you have a Chaintech motherboard. You can contact Kling's Computer Inc. HERE (http://www.klings.com/) .

They can tell you just how fast a CPU the board will take. They may even be able to sell you one.

Or...When you find out how high you can go, (I'm figuring 450mhz) you can check out THIS (http://www.compgeeks.com/products.asp?cat=CPU) site and buy a processor. I have used this company several times and have always been happy.

Hope this helps...:)

Thanks Steve,

It turns out, after lots of searching, that I have a Rise board. It is an R657. I have been able to find out that it will support either 66 or 100 bus, but don't know which PII or PIII cpu's it will support or what jumper or bios changes I need to make.

Any ideas. I'm getting closer and appreciate all the help.

Closer is good...:)

HERE (http://www.rise.com.tw/jumpup/r657.pdf) is the manual for the motherboard.

Looks like you can go all the way up to a 500mhz Pll chip. You can also increase the ram to 768megs. A very nice upgrade indeed. 512megs of ram would probably be more than enough.

Add a larger hard drive and a cd-burner?....;)
