I am trying to install personal web server on my computer so that I can view .asp files that I have coded and have run into problems. I keep getting an error with the Microsoft Transaction server and the registry. I looked up the error code and was directed to a fix. I was told to replace the Mtssetup.dll with a newer version after uninstalling the program. I did this...and it still won't work, it gives me the same error. Has anyone had problems installing this program before? Any known fixes, or is there another more (less microsoft way) in which to turn your computer into a server?

First off - which OS? I think it's called plain PWS on 98/ME but is included in IIS in 2K/XP, in which you can then create a shorcut-to if you wish.
BTW - if I remember right - once installed you will need to actually be on-line to view any asp pages. Since most of the help files are in asp, you need to be on line to view these as well. It may be possible to use a LAN instead of the internet, but I've yet to try to configure it that way.
In other words once you are "running a server" you need to access it like any other client would (even though its on the same pc) via a LAN or WAN.

I a installing PWS on a win98se machine. I did not have the disk so I downloaded the NT option pack which is supposedly the same version of pws that is on the windows98 cd. I think that this is why I am running into problems. So I am going to try reinstalling using the cd and see if I have better luck....and if that doesn't work, I will look into configuring it to use a lan. Thanks for the reply:)

Sounds like the way to go alright. Note the advice to install the minimal setup.

Have previously installed PWS on a WIN98SE Machine. I too have experienced issues with the MTS Install and in the past have just removed the MTS which resolved my issues.
As far as being able to access the PWS it does not require you to be online to use the server. Just direct your browser to http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 and you should see your base page. It may require a different URL depending on how you install PWS but it should work just the same.

Hi Headaches. It nearly drove me potty trying to get asp pages to render at all on PWS and thus see the full help documentation; that is until I would dial-up. Once I installed a NIC this was no longer a problem. Do you think I was missing something or had I configured something wrongly in the pre NIC era?

Paul,
Due to the fact that PWS is an M$ product it could be any number of configuration issues. I have heard of horror stories concerning various software products that just won't work for some people and yet I can use most of them. I find that in rare cases that some software has to be installed during the initial setup of the machine in order for it to work properly. PWS should work without any problems but if my memory serves correctly it does require a properly configured TCP/IP setup. I think I know of maybe 10 people who have successfully installed and can run PWS without issues. That means with the MTS Install working also. I am not one of them.
HeadachesAbound : Daily headaches consist of Access 97, Visual Basic 6, HTML, XML, XSL, CSS, PDF, PHP, MySQL, WINNT4, WINXP Pro, WIN98SE, and whatever else I missed.

If your feeling adventurous you could go with http://httpd.apache.org/ and http://www.apache-asp.org/

Thanks for the replies...I finally figured out what was wrong...I simply was not logged into my machine when I installed PWS...everything is working just fine now.
