Hello Everyone,, I just got this in my email and thought i would pass it on>>> WARNING! If you use a spyware removal product that flags something called "COMMON NAME TOOLBAR or CNBABE.***", DO NOT remove it with anything except Spybot S&D!. We have confirmed that the newest version of Common Name software now tampers with the Windows winsock settings and removing this software incorrectly will destroy your internet connection.
Spybot S&D has been updated to deal with this new threat. Do not use any other software to remove Common Name unless they have updated to deal with this.
Please spread this warning to all bulletin boards and newsgroups that you can because it was just confirmed this morning.

Almost sounds like a marketing ploy :(
You sure you have this file I can't seem to locate it I beleive this would be a dll file?? Right?
C:\Program Files\CommonName\Toolbar\CNBabe.dll
Thanks for the heads-up TomTom. I downloaded the Spybot update right after reading that. Spybot is free; donations are accepted. Download Spybot here (http://security.kolla.de/)

Is spy bot the same kind of product as lavaware?
Mark
They both detect and remove spyware. I run both so that one may find what the other misses. You made read some more at PC World:Spybot (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp) - Ad-Aware (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7423,00.asp).

Hmm, interesting forum... HATCHA!!! .... WHOOYAH!!!...
I too just D/L'ed Spybot and will install later when offline but like YODA says (or similar), how am I to/(why should I) be concerned that I need a fix when I have a hard enough time to find the offending party even in a search?

Maybe for the same reason people run anti-virus programs - we may not know if the system has an infection and we cannot detect it ourselves, so we use a program to do the work.

In several customer systems over the past few months, I've had to clean out "common name toolbar" from KaZaa. It's been a real problem. (Don't remember that particular .dll, tho.)
Thanks for the spy-bot update, Tom.

I don't think he is saying that we have CommonName on our systems already, but that if you do, it shouldn't be removed with a spyware scanner unless it has been updated with the latest fix. So, if you did find it with AdAware, you would want to leave it alone until you could either update AdAware or get it with Spybot. If you don't have it on your system already, you don't have to worry about it....

tomtong59 not to knock your post, as the information is correct. But, an appropriate link should have been provided to www.spywareinfo.com The reason being is that this is how misinformation gets spread. Remember the jdbgmgr.exe virus hoax? Read between the lines of YODA74's posts "It's just when a software company puts it like that, it concernse me??" or "Almost sounds like a marketing ploy " as he seems a little skepitcal. Hope this clears things up.

Ok.....
Here is a semi "in the know" take on this......
Mike Healan(webmaster/nutcase in charge/anti-spyware fanatic), sent out the above mentioned email to the subscribers of his newsletter. The needed links were contained in the message body but did not translate with the cut and paste.....
As of this point time, AdAware is not bieing updated, so it will not be correctly able to handle the newest version of CommonName (which is a browser add-on that is not only spyware but has been implicated in many drive-by installtions). It is also a browser hijacker that resets your homepage and search features....
As of the writing and sending of the above email, Spybot was the only product able to handle the fact that CommonName now royally screws with the all important Winsock files.....(essentially overwriting the standard Windows versions with its own, which if improperly removed will totally kill your internet connection......)
Yoda, to put your mind at ease, Mike is not involved in the devleopment of Spybot.....he is just a very avid fan of it......considering that Patrick (the developer will actually fix and update for errors/problems in a couple of hours as opposed to weeks) and Spybot is totally free...(although Patrick wouldn't object to someone handing him a few $$ here or there......)
