Hi Everyone,
Got problems here again. Had it running great then older son who just "knows all about computers" had a go at it. Lord! I've got it back up and running thanks to all of my training from you but now I've done forgotten W98, been used to W2K. I've set up the internet access but find that it is dialing the wrong numbers, thought I had it right but I guess not. I've been into everything in Control Panel, Internet Options, Modems, Network,Telephony, just everything and nowhere can I get a screen that will allow me to change the number and the way it's dialed!! What in the world am I doing wrong?!! Goin nuts here!
It's the IBM bomb for those of you who don't know this story!
Old, old mess is what it is but we got it running for Donnie.
It's an IBM Aptiva, K6 AMD 300 mhz,6 gig hdd, onboard video and sound, running Windows 98 with most all of the updates, and that's about it. I guess I just need a primer in 98 again. Didn't think I would have to do any more work on it after all we did, it was just Donnie using it.
Any help would really be great! Love ya all, LG;)

FTT reporting for duty...
By the title I thought it was something serious!!!
Have you tried: Start> Control Panel> Internet Options> Connections> Settings> Properties?
Nice to hear from you again LG. :)

I am not at home so I don't have it to look at, but if I remember correctly you can change the phone numbers at the window that comes up when you try to dial in. Just cancel the dial in and click on the button for settings. If this isn't true, it is probably in Dial Up Networking under the dialup account, right click and choose Properties.
If you still need help when I get home, I will be able to tell you for sure.
Budfred
Grab Spybot Search and Destroy (AV link in my sig...), it may have picked up something, also Hijack This (same place for link......)
Post the log from Hijack this (save and then open it in notepad and cut and paste it here), then go to the config button in HT and then misc tools and run a startup list and then paste that here too......

mjc, whatever kind of medication you are on, I WANT SOME ROFL!!!!
I will however run the antivirus just to be sure!:D
FTT, I've done been there and done that, really. I wouldn't bother you all if it was just that simple. This tootin thing just keeps coming up with the stangest things. I know I put everything in right the first time, at least I really think I did but I must have messed up somewhere and now I can't get back to the wizard or whatever it is to reconfigure the whole thing. I'm sorry I scared you!:D
Budfred, that's what I'm trying to not have to do, retype everything everytime Donnie goes to log on. I've retyped it several times now and it will log on that way but the next time it comes up with same bologna and I have to retype it all over again. Once it came up that it wouldn't take the edit and I had to go to dial properties to change it, I did that but there was no place to actually change the number itself. I tried checking the box about using the *70, to disable call waiting which is what I have to do but then it comes up *70,70 555-5555, that's surely not what I want it to dial. I'm gonna kill this computer:rolleyes: love ya all, LG;)
Budfred

I would run more than the AV software, run the spyware scanner and the Hijack program too. Spyware and hijackers are often not consider to be virus based by the AV companies, so they often don't pick up on it. If it is changing your phone number to 555-5555, I suspect that is due to malware.

LadyGrey,
What does Donnies pc have on it? Any antivirus and firewall? And what do you suppose "older son" did to it? And as to "I've got it back up and running" what do you mean by that? Did you reformat or just tweak things back to some state of 'order'?
The suggestions by the others are good to do anyway so you can be sure.
In the path I posted, is the telephone number correct in there but when you try it doesn't dial it correctly? That would be a malicious program if that is the case. Or if it keeps resetting it.
Don't light the fuse on the IBoMb yet...

Hi,
I was just coming back in to edit but you all beat me to it. FTT, I had to do a complete restore on the bomb. James had, so he said, tried to play a music CD with windows media player and said it messed up the computer. When I got to it, it was at a DOS screen with all kinds of things about sound, synth, crystal synth. Wish I could remember more but it all had to do with sound. I tried the commands that you all gave me in the first place, fdisk, format I even tried the old stuff that I knew didn't work but did it anyway, start, setup. It kept coming back as the usual, bad command or file name. So I just gave up, didn't want to do more damage and just went and got the restore disks and did the whole thing over again. What a mess it has been, hours and hours of updates, any way when I went to set up the internet connection, went just fine, took some doing as 98 just ain't the same as W2K but I got it done. Now, when I try to connect Donnie to the net it comes up with the weird numbers, either the *7070 or the wrong number entirely. All I'm trying to get the darn thing to do is to let me back into where I can change the number completely but so far I can't get it to do that. I go and change something in dial properties and apply it and then I try to log Donnie on and it comes up with the same strange stuff again. I've tried rebooting after each change but to no avail. I'm fixing to just remove the dial up connection entirely and try to start from scratch. There has got to be a way to get back into where you origianlly start from when you set up an internet connection in the first place. I thought I went to internet options to set it up but I guess my eyes are bad or something, I can't seem to find the same thing again.
Hope mjc isn't mad at me for giggeling, he just really thinks that I'm smarter than I am, bless him.:)
Let me know, I'm just being a goof tonight I guess. I will lay you odds that it will be something that is right under my nose that is so simple. Love ya all, LG;)

Ladygrey.
Easy way if you know the number to dial, the username and password, is to go to Control Panel<>Internet options, and click on the Connections tab.
At the top of the window is a "setup" button. Click that, and set up a complete new connection, giving it a new name.
When done, delete any other connections in the same window.
Alternatively, in the same "connections" window, click "add", and enter dialup number, username and password as prompted.
Then delete the old connection

Go to Start> Control Panel> Telephony> untick the box by "To disable call waiting dial" option. Click apply. Then OK. Stay in Control Panel> go to Internet Options> Connections Tab> Highlight your icon for your ISP in the window. (If this has no phone icon with your ISP's name beside it, do as Dave Eaton has suggested by using the Connection Wizard to set it up.) Click on Settings next to that window. Down in Dial-up Settings should be some name for Donnies pc in username. Under that should be your log-on password all hidden by *******. If either of these are blank, they need to be filled in. Then Click on Advanced next to that window. In 'Area code' put Star70 like this: *70 In the telephone number box, put the complete number needed to dial to your ISP. 1800xxxxxxx or whatever is needed. OK your way out, and see if this works.
The only other thing to try if you forgot your log-on info for Donnie's pc is to call your ISP's tech support (most are 24/7) and have the tech walk you through the setup over the phone. (Edit) They will be able to retrieve your sign up passwords and usernames if you've forgotten any. (/edit)
If that doesn't do it, well it might be getting close to time to take the horse behind the barn... Just kidding!

If the other suggestions don't work, I would wonder if James downloaded anything nasty when he crashed the machine. As I understand it, courtesy mjc, some malware (like Klez) can hide itself in RAM so that if you reformat and don't shut down the whole system before a reboot, it can reinfect. I doubt this is Klez, but it could be something else. If you have a write protected and updated virus/malware scanner, you could check this before resorting to a complete reformat and so on....
Budfred
It sounds suspiciously like a dialer, many of them will dial to porn sites, others just dial to who knows where, and the can be picked by "drive by" downloads from just about anywhere, but often from sites that are less than reputable (like some game sites...the ones that offer "cracked" versions, various warez sites and other unsavory places, not just "adult oriented" places).
Malware is a catch-all term that not only includes the well know nasties like viruses, trojans and worms but things like spyware (programs that collect your personal data and send it to a server run by a marketing firm), browser hijackers (programs that will take over your start/home page and default search engine), dialers and some multifunction things like CommonName and NewdotNet.....
Unfortuanately most AV apps just do viruses (they do include trojans, but only some of the more well known ones), they do not include other types.

Good Morning,
Well, after most of the night downloading all the programs mjc suggested I've gotten two of them run with good results. Spybot and AntiVir. Spybot came up with alot of reg. changes but I kinda figure that with all the updates and downloads that there would be some and it did find several of those awful doubleclick and adserver things, those I cleaned out but I left the others alone. AntiVir found nothing at all thank goodness! I'm working on Hijackthis but I'm getting an Error Starting Program message. "A required.DLL file, MSVBVM60.DLL, was not found". What is it and why do I need it, and where do I get it? Just full of questions this morning ain't I? :) I'm still not even sure what a .DLL file is but I know that lots and lots of people have problems with them and that the computer must have all of them to function properly. After I get the .DLL business sorted out I'm going to go on to what Dave suggested and try that. This time I'll put my glasses on, maybe I'll be able to see what's right under my nose.:D
Thanks for all the good suggestions, I know with your help I'll get this bomb back on track. Thanks so much everyone, you all are always here when I need you! LG;)

:D The .dll files are drivers, many of which can be found in your CAB files on your 98 disk. (or recovery) They are very small so you can download them with one pc and put them on floppy to put them in the other. Here's a page of them for download. Someone will have to help you put them in, I'm late for work.
MSVBVM60.DLL (http://www.google.ca/search?q=MSVBVM60.DLL&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=)
But I'll check in later... :)

Someone will have to help you put them in, I'm late for work. He He late for work:D
Go to the following site and download the Microsoft
Visual Basic Version 6.0 Runtime Files installer.
http://support.microsoft.com/support/vbasic/runtime.asp
Download the installer (Vbrun60sp3.exe ) to your desktop,
then when offline, doubleclick the setup file to install all the
required files into their correct directories.
Restart your computer.
If you want to, you can make a copy of the version of
msvbvm60.dll in C:\Windows\System but it would be better
to keep Vbrun60sp3.exe as a backup of ALL Visual Basic
6 runtime files.
If any go missing, simply relaunch the installer.

Of course I have no idea what all that means:eek: I'm sure mjc or one of my other gurus will tho. That was the last of the programs that mjc I think told me to get and run. Donnies puter is so slow and so old that it took most the night to get them all but it sure was worth it! I have not touched or fixed anything and I won't till I hear from you all.
Now on to what David suggested. I'll check in later. LG;)
Got ya Yoda, I'll go do that too just to be on the safe side!! Thank you all!!
The one possible item that is on the list that can mess with a connection is the call wave software. If it isn't really needed on this machine try disabling it.

Just how much RAM is in Donnies pc? Did you ever max it out? Try Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/Programs/Crucial/advisor.exe) to see how much without having to pull the sticks if you don't recall. I still have your manual on a backup CD somewhere near and will look to see what the limit is.
I realize it's either pc66 or pc100 RAM but if you fill it to the brim, it will seem a bit faster along with minimizing the number of apps running in the background.
Older RAM is real, real cheap and worth every penny. You could order some just in time for a stocking stuffer

I will disable the callwave for now, but when and if it goes back into active use I'll have to have it. Got to have a way for people to get hold of me at all times.
FTT, right now it only has 64 megs of memory but you have to remember that this is so old, only has a 300 mhz cpu, 6 gig hdd, nothing compared to what is out there now. Can't remember for the life of me what kind of RAM it takes, I've got the manual that you got me too, around here somewhere. I'll look for it today and see what I can come up with.
Thanks so much everyone!!! LG;)

and if your's is the 2139 model the CDROM is a 2x DVD player!!! I suggest you try it!
Also if it is, the RAM can go all the way up to pc100 384 megs. That would allow multiple pages or better sound and video viewing especially on webpages.

Hi All,
Sorry it took me so long, we had some snow out here and just threw all of us into a tizzy.
Ok, I have got the bomb up and running and have got it connected to the net just fine. I just kept running all the programs, the ones that mjc told me too and defrag and scan disk and I disabled all the things that FTT thought I should. None of the programs seemed to find anything but for some reason I was able to get the dialer to dial the correct number and with Davids tips was even able to set up two different net accounts, one for Donnie and one for my older sons girlfriend. So I can keep track of whose doing what. Seems to be running just great now so I'm a happy camper!! Thanks to each and every one of you, I really mean what I say when I tell you that I don't know what I would do without you!! The way that you all give of your time and knowledge is just wonderful. I bless the day I found this board and you all. Thanks again!! LG;)
oh yeah, FTT the bomb is the 2153 E3N. I've found the manual you got me but just haven't had time to even look at it!! LG;)
