Hope you guys had a nice thanks giving holidays. Welcome back. I have a question for you.

OS:win2000 professional, HD 4.3GB, Celeron 900 Mtz. 128 RAM. LG 52X CD-ROM. (Bought a barebone with intel mobo & Celeron 900Mtz)
I formated HD and installed WIN 98, no other software installed. Then upgraded to win 2000 professional, went on nicely. Modem:bought Apache 56K voice modem for $29.99. Installed modem and having problem with Com1. So I thought of adding additional com port. It has added com3. When I checked properties this message coming up:'This device cannot start (code 10)', checked resources settings, it says:'this device is not using any resources because it has a problem'
Do you think I should not add any more com ports and stay with com1 and configure modem to it instead of going thru other problems? If so how about guiding me to config modem to com1 because I am having problem with com1 to config modem to it. Thanks:D

If this is an internal modem, you are usually going to have the easiest time letting the install software pick the COM port. That said, I had to disable a com port in BIOS on one system to get the system to recognize and run the modem. Have you run the program that will check to see where your modem is installed and determine if the com port is ok?

I dont know the specs of that modem. But you can check the modem board providing it's internal and see if there are jumpers on it to set the IRQ and COM Port. Most of the new modems are PCI and are Plug N Play so they dont have jumpers.

Other suggestions in order
1) Remove any modems that you added in the modems control panel in Windows.
2) Remove all com ports listed in Windows.
3) If Software came with modem. Install software prior to plugging in/installing modem. Reboot. Install modem, and see if Windows detects it. It should set it up completely.

If above doesnt work.
1) Try changing slot card is in.
2)In Windows. Delete all com ports and reboot. Then use add new modem wizard and see if it will find it automatically.

3) Disable a com port in the bios.
4) Reserving IRQ for particular port

If all this does not work. I suggest returning the modem, and purchasing a different brand like US Robotics/3 Com.

Thanks for the response. Final outcome - I returned the modem and bought HIVAL 56K modem. Since my friend has this Apache modem for almost a year I thought its a good one so I bought it last week, he is also having problem with it now. Windows 2000 recognized this new modem and I checked by going on internet it worked.

Now display color shows 256 only, on this very sys and when I tried to change the setting from control panel eigher to trycolor 16bit or 24 bit, getting error message. How to change color option in Windows 2000? Video card is integrated to intel mobo. Barebone came with drivers CD. Do you think I should go to intel site and see if they have any new drivers for this mobo????

Hi Sylander, once I fix everything on this HD with Win 2000 on it, you know what I am going to do next - look out for questions:D

Might have to reinstall the video drivers....should be able to find them on Intel's site.

Thanks mjc. I did go to intel site and checked my sys's mobo and downloaded video and sound drives into a subfolder called 'download' in c: drive. Took me looooong time, using 56K modem of course. I unzip them from the subfolder and at the end it said 'unzipped and installed'. But when I tried to change settings in display contrl panel to 'true color (24Bit) this message pop up:The display control panel is unable to change the display settings. The graphics drives returned an unezpected error. So I had to cancel stay with 256 colors. Where I am going wrong here?????
