I have a HP Pavilion 513n with WinXP. My End Task doesn't work. In other words, if I have a program that is not responding,I bring up the Task Manager. But, when I click on the End Task button, it will not end the task. It just brings up another box that has the same End Task option on it. If I click that button, I get back to the original box. There is nothing I can do to shut down the program. I finally have to end up just shutting down the computer. This computer is only 2 months old, and if my memory serves me correctly, there has been only very few times when this has worked correctly.

Hi Frank,

What program or programs does this happen with? If it is happening with all programs, when you're in task manager click view > update speed and see if it is set to "paused". If it is switch it to anything else.

Hope it helps...:)

hmmm... have you tried Highlighting it and then select "end task"?
and what happens when you use the three fingered salute?

are you just shutting down the computer or are you cold booting?
(just pressing the button quickley)?
(or holding button in untill it shuts down)?

do you have fast shut down running?(if you do go to msconfig shut it down}.

System stability may be an issue here you may need to repair

If the prior suggestions don't work, you might want to run a full virus/spyware/malware scan to make sure you don't have some nasty program running in the background causing the problem.

End task usually works. Sometimes you need to give it a bit of time though - loops can occur, and the program just goes off on it's merry way regardless of whatever else is going on.
Antivirus software may be appropriate, otherwise, something like norton systemworks, to sort out the problems before they occur.

Maybe I'm just not giving it enough time. Next time it happens, I'll go make myself a cup of coffee and let it go for awhile. If I still have the problem, I'll try what has been suggested. Thanks

Hi Frank. I think Steve might have a point. If you have checked go with your other idea of waiting, it does take time. I had the same problem when I started with Xp and turned out to be pause in task manager.
