When viewing a subdirectory in explorer and the directory is full of JPEG's more that 100, the small associations icons for each file updates very slowly. This hogs my system. When I turn on the system monitor on I notice that the processor is running flat out, ie 100%. I have set my performance activator from programs to chache and this has helped ever so slightly. Once the directory is in cache the system runs normally. Has someone out there been having the same problem??
The problem is that XP is generating a thumbnail view for each jpeg in the folder, and that takes time. You can turn off the thumbnail view...

Thumbnails:confused: I understand thumbnails as being a thumbnail of the image in the file. That's my understanding. I am talking about the standard windows association icons. These should surely not slow down a system:( On my second system almost the same in hardware except for the lesser NVidia MX200 in it, it works at lightning speed. Tried changing the video cards but that did not do the trick. Hence my question.
But thanks for the quick reply. Generating small thumbnail from the file does slow down the system.:)
I think you will find that what is causing the slow down with your display is the winXP default to also display the graphics sizes.
IE: 1024x768 ,, and or what ever size
I also noticed this last night on a system I was working on.( 100 plus graphics files in a folder)
it will display the default icons.
Then it will update the file specs
I'm not sure you can turn that Option off .
But it should be possible somewhere in the options or in a reg hack.

Thanks Rick, at least you get the same problem. I have had a look at almost everything but not in detail in the registrary. Maybe someone out there knows.
I have had some succes in setting the performance setting from programs to cache. This seems to help speeding it up the first time you access and very fast the second or more times because the data is then in cache. Did not see any program degradation though. What do you think about the setting??
