Since installing XP Pro, I've found that most pics I save from websites as .bmps, will not open to view in either Paint, PSPro or any other image viewer/editor.

Since I'm using AOL, the only options I get to save images is either the default AOL specific .art format (yeuchhh...), or as a .bmp.

Unfortunately, I cant even open these to convert them to .jpegs of .gifs.

If I double click on the image file, it gives me a message saying that it "Is not a valid JPEG file" or something?.

This never happened previously in 98SE, is it a problem that has a solution peculiar to XP?.

Have you tried opening them from inside a viewer program. Instead of double clicking on the file, open Paint and select Open, browse to the image file and the open from there. Sometimes that will work when double clicking won't.

Yeah, tried that in both Paint and PSPro7. Still get the same message.

A fellow here (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20314561.html) had the same problem in IE6. Maybe the solutions offered will help your case?

Hope it helps.

go into folder options and look see what you have your picture file types are supposed to open with.Should be windows picture and fax viewer.you'll have to go thru you file settings and make sure that all pics are set to open with the program you specify?

I would suspect that AOL is blocking pics again they did this a while back? My daughter used to use aohell and i would send pics and they would block them they never would give a good reason other than bandwidth BUT i don't see why if there on your machine that they will not open in a viewer program? don't have any good suggestions This never happened previously in 98SE, is it a problem that has a solution peculiar to XP?.

No this is not normal with XP I suspect user error or AOL

Have you been screwing with the Associations in File manager(found in the windows folder called Winfile.exe)?Open a file (in Winfile) untill you find a bit map immage (BMP)(click on an immage once on the right, go to file),(top) then scroll down to associate)does it say File with extension BMP.associate with Bit map immage (it should).
