View Full Version : IE to Netscape
I used to use IE and when I started it, my modem would dial in to my ISP. I have recently changed from IE to Netscape. Is there a way to do the same?

Go to Dialup Networking and right click on your internet connection. Choose Properties and go to Dialing in the window that opens. Choose "Dial whenever an internet connection is not present".

I do not have that. Do you mean in the control pannel under internet options? I already have that selected as it was needed for IE to do what I want Netscape to do.

No, Budfred means in My Computer, DialUp Networking..then right click on the icon for your ISP, and check the box he mentioned. I have a setting in the AT&T connection gizmo that says something along the lines of "Connect me automatically" or something that I had to uncheck because I don't want it to connect automatically..so if you have something similar, you need to check there too.
Shouldn't matter which browser you're using, but I would make Netscape the default browser if you haven't already. And good luck...I tried Netscape years ago and I blame MS for it never working right.:)

What Kay said. You can access Dialup Networking from a number of different places, but it is different than the Internet Settings. Those refer primarily to IE although they can have impacto on other browsers. The one I am referring to is specifically for your connection to your ISP dialing configuration.

I'm not sure that I follow you.
I 2xclick on my computer and then do the same for network neiborhood. There are now two icons: make new connection and sympatico (the dialer for my ISP), but there is no "Dial whenever an internet connection is not present" in there. I just thought you meant Internet Options because, as far as I know, that is the only place that such as option is.

You right click on your Sympatico icon and choose Properties. A window will open that has Dialing properties listed and you will find the setting there.

I got home and realized I forgot to specify that you right click on the icon in Dialup Networking. You should be able to find that through your Settings on the Start Menu or under Communication in Accessories in Programs on the Start Menu. Once you open it, right click on the icon and choose Properties, then the Dialing tab and the setting will be on that.

I'm sorrey for being so dence but I still don't follow you.
I use Win98 SE. Could you explain the process from the desktop?

I am using WinME, but I think the process is the same. You go to Start, up to Settings, over to Dialup Networking and click. In the window that opens you should see an icon for Sympatico. Right click on this icon and a menu will open. Select Properties by clicking on it, it should be at the bottom of the menu. Another window will open with tabs, select Dialing and look at the options in that tab. It should have the one we are talking about.
If it isn't set up that way, go to Start, up to Programs, to Accessories, to (I think) Communications, and then Dialup Networking. Click on that and follow the same instructions above.
When I get home I will check an install of Win98 to make sure it is the same, but I believe one of these 2 options will get you there.
Good luck,
Budfred
Neither of those will work for me. There is no dialup networking in the setting menu so the first is out, there is no dialing option in my sympatico properties so the second is out.

I tried checking in my build that has Win98, but I don't have the modem installed yet. When you open the Properties for your ISP connection, what tabs does it have?? It is probably under one of them.
I will install the modem later tonight and will let you know what I find if you haven't already solved the problem.

Ok, I installed the modem and set up a bogus connection (I don't have dialup). I tried to open IE and it didn't offer the connection box. I then went to Options in IE and the Connection tab. I marked to connect with a modem and the next time I tried, it brought up the dialing dialog. Without an actual connection, I couldn't go all the way to figuring out how it sets up to start dialing automatically. I am planning to install Netscape 7 later, so I will see if I can get that to do the deed. What version of Netscape are you using, I don't think it matters, but it would be good to know just in case.
Budfred
It is Netscape 7. I found how to do this: Go Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Cache and of the four radio buttons select "Every time I view the page" because Netscape was keeping a cached copy of my homepage and just starting with it. If I tell it to get a new copy every time I view it, the dialer will start when I start Netscape.

Glad you found it. I was going to look more again today since I installed NS 7 in my sister's computer.
