View Full Version : Dual boot no more.

I set up a dual boot with WinXP and Win98 on my sister's computer to more easily use legacy programs, but then found that XP does a better job with them than Win98. I reformatted the D: partition where I had put Win98 hoping that the system would recognize that and stop pausing to ask whether to boot to WinXP or Win98. However, it still pauses there even though Win98 is gone. Please tell me how to eliminate this pause. It is not a big deal since it only adds 30 seconds to the boot, but it may confuse my sister and I would like to get rid of it.
Thanks,
Budfred

Merry Christmas Budfred,
If you go to the boot.ini file, you can change timeout=30 to timeout=1 and it will boot 29 seconds faster. :)
Or you could just format and reinstall the whole thing, setting it up the way you want.
There's probably other ways to do it. I'll look around. ;)
Open the boot.ini file in Notepad and look for the lines referrencing 98 and remove them......

Thanks for the ideas. I modified boot.ini to only wait 1 second, but I didn't find reference to Win98 to delete. Here is the text:
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"
It refers to Win98 as "Microsoft Windows" in the boot sequence, so I am assuming that is the reference here, but I am confused about the C:\ = "Microsoft Windows" reference since Win98 was installed on the D: partition. Can anyone tell me how to modify the above safely so that I don't have to reformat and reinstall. I have to go home Friday and I want to get this done so I can relax a little first.
Thanks again,
Budfred

Take out the line C:\ = "Microsoft Windows" and that will do it.

Thanks, that is exactly what I did last night and it worked fine. I'm back in MN now, so I am hoping she won't have any problems I have to fix long distance.
Thanks all for the help.
