For those in the know or experience of upgrading, can the Intel 850 chipset (NB not the new 850E) support processors 2GHZ and beyond with 400 MHz FSB,with or without Northwood.
My system is a Pentium 4 1.6,mobo Gigabyte GA-8ITXE and would like to know the fastest processor suitable. From the Gigabyte website, these 2 GHz+ processors dont seem to be tested or supported.

Yes, the original i850 will take any P4 on a 400MHz bus, which is... up to a P4 2.8GHz I think? Or was it 2.6GHz? Something like that. Also, all P4's above 2GHz are Northwoods.
Your mobo's page, here (http://tw.giga-byte.com/products/8itxe.htm), shows that you can even manually set the fsb up to 533MHz, but there's no guarantee that you can get PC1066 RDRAM to work. For that you'll need the i850E chipset (even tho PC1066 isn't "officially" supported).

The 850 can take Pentium 4 processors upto 3.06 GHz. Check out the following Intel URLs.

Thanks for the replies.
However, if referring to this (http://tw.giga-byte.com/support/support.htm) under Support:Socket 478 Pentium,2 GHz+ are blank for this mobo.
I dont know whether this means these processors do not apply to this specific mobo or the 850 chipset in general.Seems IMO Intel has changed the rules ,for 2 GHz+ so they are supported by other chipsets (845,850E).

This board (with it's original bios) will support any 400MHz Socket 478 P4 up to 2.4 GHz. The specs state a multiplier from 8 up to 24. 24 x 100 = 2400. (sorry about that);)
As for accomodating the P4 2.5 or 2.6, it is not clear whether any of the later bios updates addressed this. For those processors you will have to e_mail Gigabyte.
Will definitely support 2.0A to 2.4A P4.
GA 8ITXE (http://www.giga-byte.com/products/8itxe.htm)
I think Gigabyte has discontinued this board and the tests you refer to above may no longer be updated for it. Because it is blank does not mean it is not supported. It only means that either Gigabyte has not tested it or has not updated their test results. If it read N/A that is a sign that it won't work, but with a little tweaking you might get a CPU with an N/A to work.;)
