Problem: Unable to write files to hard disk (can read files from disk)
History of the problem:
The computer suffered from random shut downs and some W95 software didn't run any more.
Scandisk was run on the disk. At a certain point during Scandisk surface check, the house circuit breaker switched off all power.
This feature repeated again. Possible electric problems due to heat/dust?The computer was cleaned.
Scandisk was started again and was able to detect some bad clusters, but tripped the house circuit breaker again.
From this last electric incident, unable to boot from the hard disk.
The CMOS setup screen automatically pops up and it is necessary to redefine manually the hard disk. The CMOS battery has been replaced with no improvement.
After manual setup of the parameters, message "non system disk" .
The computer boots correctly in DOS mode from a startup floppy (without having to do anything on the CMOS setup), and it is possible to go to the hard disk and read the files.
But when trying to write anything to the hard disk, in any directory, message "sector missing".
When running scandisk from the floppy on the hard disk, same kind of message "unable to run scandisk, sector missing".
I have a slave hard disk that can be accessed with no problems.
Running Scandisk from the slave hard disk on the master hard disk, again message "unable to run scandisk, sector missing".
Before swapping slave and master disks, does anybody have a suggestion that could help me out of this situation?
