Strange nite, first had trouble logging in and now have critical update I can't get rid of.
After sp1 for Xp HP had a critical update put on so you could use their restore function. Ms said that the critical notification would leave after doing update, guess what, I had done udate and know for sure it worked and still cannot get rid of this notification. Any ideas, not a big deal but annoying.

Couple of ideas HERE (http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/tech/weekly/1628879/)
There's likely to be a reg hack for this (probably one of the run keys) but haven't come across it. Don't know if this would appear in msconfig - but worth a peep.

Thanks Paul, You guys amaze me with how you find these links. I don't think I am going to turn off the notifications but will check msconfig.
Let you know later,
Mark:) :)

Quick update,
You can turn off automatic updates in msconfig but I still don't think I'll do that Iam going to e-mail both HP and Ms and see if they know anything, HA HA HA HA !!!

FYI rather than a fix: there are three particular files where windows updates and driver installs and updates are logged. All are in the Windows durectory. Also, the most likely registry key that opens the warning dialog is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run (though as a result this should show up in msconfig).
Windows Update.log
Windows Update.txt
Setupapi.log
If you check out the Windows Update.log it should indicate whether this installation was OK or not, even if you think it went ahead properly. Apart from hacking things, the only thing I can think of to get rid of the annoyance would be to install the update again.

Hi Paul,
It is a little more complicated than that. The update is not from Ms but from HP, this is so you do not lose the non-destructive recovery ability from HP. You download it from HP and put it in the bios. Ms update alerts you to this update from HP and says it will go away after you make update. As usual the critical update did not leave even after I successfully made upgrade from HP. Long winded but thats the story .

Hey Paul,
just an update I reinstalled the fix [which overwrote the first one] and all is well. The critical update notification left.
I need a life, Mark:D
