Running 2000 after opening up any folder with jpegs, when I highlight the file no image appears in the left pane. Works for bitmaps, but not jpegs. Did those registry rebuild commands, but no change.

Any ideas? My default viewer is Irfan View which didn't cause a problem when it was installed.

when you open up your picturers folder click on "view" select " details"
see if that helps

I'm set for details as default. I hate that 3rd grade default icon view!

Sorry to ask the obvious, but your implication is that it worked before, but isn't working now, right? So, did you change something recently? Or install something? And I take it from your post that you already checked file associations to be sure that something installed didn't change the program to open jpgs with? When I installed PSP, I didn't understand one part of the installation process, and it "ate" every image file in my puter! They all changed to .psp files there for a bit..oops!:) Truthfully, I have never used the left pane thing on the Desktop..got rid of it a long time ago, so not exactly sure how those previews work..so my file association question may not be on target anyway. But, if it worked before, but doesn't now..it's almost always something you changed or installed.

I use Irfan View which I have found to be a real nice small program. I use to use MS PhotoEditor buried within Office 97. It is my default viewer. I have no problem viewing the jpegs, I can't PREview them in the left pane. I like the left pane since it shows you folder info, size and the best, the preview function without opening up another program to view the image!
The preview has been working up to about 4 months ago. I have been using Irfan Viewer langer than that. As far as changing something, I always am changing something, or something is always changing something everytime you install or un install a program. I also use V Com's (formerly Ontrack) System Suite of clean up registry entries. Probably sopmething happened from one of the above, but who knows. I'm not going to stop using System Suite that I have been using for the last 4 1/2 years on the chance that might of been the problem. It's too hard to determine that in the first place.

Have you tried "Reset Defaults" in Exploer<>Tools<>FolderOptions and tried repairing IE and also "Reset Web Settings" IE<>Tools<>InternetOptions<>Programs.

For further ideas/fixes have a look through:-

I do have web view enabled.
I don't use Idiot Exploiter, but I did reset the options, but no change.
The first link is for 98. I have 2k.
The 2nd link, the 2nd fix; that file is missing.
I'll try that file from the 3rd link.

The 2nd link with the first entry of those registry fixes did the trick.

Thanks! Love to know what happened. This isn't the first time. (yea, I know, something changed something, but what and when?)

Yep - you'll probably never know. :D Program installation time is a very likely one, since every piece of software installed wants more than a piece of the action and "messes" with the file associations. One thing that is of value to cut down on such conflicts is to always have minimal applications running at install time; if one is feeling particularly paranoid/careful, then using msconfig and rebooting just for an install may be of help.
