Power supply question

My friend has a computer that won't boot so I checked the power supply and it is bad. I am not sure that this is the only thing wrong with the computer and I was wondering if a bad motherboard can cause a power supply to short. I don't have an extra power supply to try and don't know if I should risk buying a new power supply and shorting it out if the motherboard or pcu is bad.

well how about some system specs?? what type.. how old etc?? Anything else you can think of that might help? do you know exactly where it wouldn't boot to? does it get post or not that far,fans running etc...?
Is there anything left or is it just a door stop?? After re readingthe post..seems the PSU is bad pretty much lays claim.. now what? Kind of hard to go with out one??

Thanks. I have an MSI 6119 motherboard with a pentium III 450. When I first tried to turn on the computer both the processor fan and power supply fan came on for a split second and shut off. No display came to the monitor and not lights on the keyboard. After trying twice the fans won't even come on now. Nothing happens. I checked to see if there was any voltage on the wires of the power supply and there was none. The fuse is good and the fan runs because I shorted the black wire with the green.

:D Take a quess here! the PSU is Dead. without knowing how old it is (which really nowa days) doesn't make much difference. You'll need to find a known good one and hook it up? Hard to say whether or not the MOBO caused the prob.? thats trial and error?

It is pretty unlikely that a bad motherboard would short a power supply unless the motherboard itself is shorted. I would go ahead and try a new power supply and see how it goes. If you still have problems, post back for more ideas.
