I recently bought a new computer which is pretty fast and works really well but it only has 256 MB's of ddr 266Mhz memory.

So what i want to know is when buying more memory what type do i need?
does it have to be same size, manufacturer, do i need to do it in pairs? same speed 266?

thanks for any help:)

You can install another 266MHz 256 MB DDR SDRAM sitck. Only Simm slots need memory to be installed in pairs. You can add DDR sticks in singles also. You can visit this DDR FAQ (http://www.theddrzone.com/faq.php?PHPSESSID=aeafa27fe08973908a1a6740ff3fc6c0 ) for more information. But i reckon that the 256 MB DDR SDRAM at present should suffice for all normal applications, unless you are planning for graphics core applications!

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

Virtual RAM is when your computer uses your hard drive to supplement RAM. You may be able to use it less with more RAM installed, but you can also increase it if you are having problems with running out.

Best Buy has Crucial 256Meg DDR 2100 RAM on sale this week for about $35 after rebates and that is a really good deal.

Are you running alot of apps at the same time? Before you play any games are you making sure that you've dumped all your Temporary Internet Files? For that matter, do you manage your temp files and dump them regularly?

Absolutely! Nearly everything running in the Task Menu can be started through Start>Programs>etc...

You can also check here:http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm to see what the programs are and if you absolutely need them running in the background. Hope this helps! ;)

When upgrading RAM, it is usually advisable to purchase the same brand and type of memory that's already in there. Some boards are really picky and may choke on two different brands of RAM. This holds true especially for MSI boards.

Additionally, the new NForce2 chipset requires that RAM be installed in pairs.
