Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

There are a number of different things that could interfere with a download, but we are going to need more info to help you figure it out. What type of connection to the internet are you using (dialup modem, cable, DSL??)? What program are you using to browse and download the internet (Internet Explorer, Netscape, and so on)? Is this a new problem or is this the first time you have tried to download? What version of Windoze are you using? What type of computer are you using to access the internet?

The more detail you can give us, the more likely we can help.

The fragmented film strip picture could be the one you get when you try to play video files/other media from within a browser without the plugin installed. Just an idea.

Go to "Start->Run" and type "dxdiag" in the "Open" window and click "ok".
Run the test and see if you need an upgrade.

I'm assuming when you say "download" you mean you're trying to view a web page image by downoading the necessary info on your internet connection.
Am I right or wrong?

Hi Budfred,
I use a dial up modem. My ISP is SBC Yahoo Dial;speed connection is 115200bps; my browser is the internet explorer, I have windows 98. No this is a problem I've been trying to solve on my own since I got it back from the computer repair guy. I noticed he took out my winzip, publisher, and some other programs that I did not ask him to remove. I don't want to take it back to him since he jacked my computer up. I've been trying all this time to figure it out. I just learned about these forums and decided to get help through these sessions.
Thanks!

Hi Firstlady.

What kind of file (zip, exe etc) are you trying to download? Are you using GetRight or any other download "managers"?

Also, what do you mean when you say the computer repair guy "jacked it up"? It would be a good idea to find out in as much detail as possible what he did to your system since it may not be possible to get it working right without knowing or starting from scratch. Did he give you any reason for deleting some of your files? As you will probably hear from some of the people here who do this stuff for a living, if he agreed to fix your machine, you shouldn't have to be struggling to fix it yourself for hours, days or weeks afterward. What was wrong that you took it in to be fixed in the first place??

Hi Budfred,
I mean no offense to you who do this for a living. The guy who I took my computer for a memory upgrade and cd-rom repair Gave me my computer back under the impression everything was fixed. I paid him for a 128 memory but he claims the computer will only show 64 when listing it in the system file. The cd-rom still would not work even though he said he put in a new one. He did not give an explanation why he deleted some files because he did not tell me he did. I found out when it came time for me to use that particular program that it was gone.
I hate to have to take it back to this guy but I'm told that it may be that i need a proxy number which he has; which they say needs to be put in the computer inorder for me to download. If this is true where on the computer can I locate the proxy number and where do I have to enter it in.

So you are saying that this guy ripped you off. 128megs should show as 128megs of RAM. I am not sure what proxy number you are talking about, but maybe someone else here will. I urge you to find a friend who knows something about the nuts and bolts of computers to take a look at yours and find out what this guy did with your RAM and maybe help you sort the rest of the system out too. Or ask around and find a decent computer repair person to take it too. Sounds like you've been robbed. How much did he charge you for the 64meg? You can buy 128meg these days for about $10 after rebates.

I didn't see you as meaning any offense, my point is that the people that do computer repair are usually proud of their work and do a good job, it sounds like the guy you dealt with fits neither of those criteria.

One other thing, you referred to "Acrobat Reader, Kazaa Media Desktop." I am not sure what that is, but the Kazaa part sets off alarms. Kazaa is infamous for distributing really buggy software that is packed with spyware. This is software that spies on you and reports back to the people that send it out. This could be part of the problem you are having if you have Kazaa installed on your system.

Is this a proprietary computer, i.e., DELL, HP, etc.?

If not, do you know anything about what type of MotherBoard, processor, etc., you have?

What you might want to do is enter the BIOS (usually begin tapping the DELETE key right after pressing the power button) SAVE and EXIT...The BIOS may simply need to recognize the additional RAM which it would do following this proceedure...reboot...

Also, no need to quote entire paragraphs...
